Watershed Stewardship Planner

Job Purpose or Objective(s):  Responsible for identifying, developing, implementing, and administering sustainable planning and practices for tribal water resources in accordance with the historic Water Settlement Agreement.  You will report to the Hydrologist.

Primary Tasks:

1.      Coordinate and implement watershed improvement activities and long-term sustainable planning development for the Choctaw Nation Watershed Stewardship program.

2.      Use analyzed water quality data to develop parameter trends and recommend watershed management plans and identify potential best management practices for implementation.

3.      Inventory and compile relevant plans, studies, and data to be used in the planning process.

4.      Help identify best management practices to implement on the prioritized potential locations and develop a strategy to complete the implementation process.

5.      Work cooperatively with internal tribal departments to coordinate efforts, and with state and federal agencies for potential funding mechanisms.

6.      Develop and present reports, technical comments, and interpret technical reports for community leaders and Choctaw Nation leadership.

7.      Develop and implement outreach plans to promote watershed health activities and public engagement to mobilize youth and adult awareness and advocacy.

8.      Attend/participate in networking, conference, and training opportunities to increase knowledge of environmental issues and management practices to improve watershed health. Keep informed about current environmental resiliency planning and policy issues, resources, and programs.

9.      Inventory existing data and resources available at the federal, state, and local level and integrate such data to inform a watershed-based improvement and planning effort.

10.   Provide presentations of significance to community leaders and stakeholders at different environmental, economic, and rural/urban development platforms.

11.   Other tasks as assigned.

Job Requirements:

·         Bachelor's Degree of Environmental Science or related field or;

·         Five (5) years of environmental data analysis and land management or related experience.

·         Ability to interpret data, conduct analyses, and compose comprehensive documents. 

·         Experience with scientific protocols, scientific reports, public speaking, and gap identification

·         Experience with Geographic Information System (GIS) software

·         Experience with land management and agricultural best practices and environmental project management

·         Experience in urban planning/community development, environmental assessments, and prescribed burns
