Pay Range

$206,490 - $265,188 Annually for the SEL.4 level
$247,800 - $318,216 Annually for the SEL.5 level
This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting.  An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Job Description

We have an opening for a W87-1 Design Engineering Lead.  In this position you will be a member of the W87-1 Modification Program Leadership team, providing direct oversight of W87-1 design engineering activities. You will provide programmatic leadership for a large set of high-level technical activities to provide a qualified W87-1 design in accordance with internal and external program requirements. This position is in Defense Technologies Engineering Division within the Engineering Directorate.

Depending on your assignment, this position may offer a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You may have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will

Provide overall W87-1 design engineering leadership and oversight by leading the design engineering integration and product realization for both the W87-1 War Reserve and Joint Test Assembly Systems.Ensure W87-1 design engineering scope is adequately staffed; prioritize staffing alignment with design engineering scope to ensure requirements can be met. Oversee the programmatic activities of the LLNL W87-1 Integrated Product Team leadsActively interface with partner sites, including production agencies, Sandia National Laboratories, and NNSA on behalf of the W87-1 program. Provide technical and/or programmatic management solutions, including determining and pursuing courses of action essential to obtaining desired outcomes, to highly unusual, complex, and/or sensitive issues where the solution path is not known ahead of time.Ensure that program risks and requirements are communicated in an effective and timely manner to senior leadership.Serve in a programmatic oversight role of multiple Control Account Managers (CAMs) as one of seven W87-1 leads who execute a management role overseeing and guiding CAMs.Monitor programmatic performance required to meet milestones and deliverables.Manage many parallel tasks requiring the resolution of conflicting work requirements and the prioritization of tasks to meet pre-determined targets.Serve as a technical contact for the Program at meetings, briefings, design reviews, and committees both internal and external to the Laboratory.Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.5 level

Influence strategic technical decisions made by senior management and external customers based on NEP design expertise.Mentor staff across the organization, including other mentors. Advise across the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) as an expert in weapon design engineering, 6.x Lifecycle Processes, Production Agencies, Product Realization Teams/Product Realization, Certification, and Qualification work.Serve as organization spokesperson for Laboratory management and/or peers in the NSE representing the Laboratory in NEP design and project engineering.Serve as key member of the W87-1 Program management team and interface to senior management to address workforce needs, safety, security, technical quality, and project management. Qualifications This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.Extensive knowledge of, and experience in, execution of nuclear weapon design, life extension and modernization programs, systems engineering, requirements management, weapon assessment activities and product realization processes between design and production agencies.Ability to promote and maintain productive relationships across directorates, with other laboratories, and with personnel from external entities across the NSE.Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to present, explain, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.Significant leadership, interpersonal, and organizational skills to lead personnel, provide performance feedback, and actively participate in performance management activities from a programmatic point of view.Significant experience in project planning and highly complex technical leadership.Significant experience developing and implementing creative solutions to a diverse range of highly complex problems.Ability/commitment to promote and value inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability principles in the workplace.

Additional qualifications at the SEL.5 level

Extensive experience and demonstrated ability to apply, lead, and/or develop cutting-edge principles, theories, concepts, and technologies. Ability to plan the integration and implementation of new programs and/or operational best practices. Extensive experience sustaining productive relationships with other divisions, directorates, laboratories, plants, NNSA management, other institutions across the DOE and DOD enterprise, and external advisors and reviewers.Extensive experience with project management tools and techniques, including work planning, scheduling, cost estimating, analyzing, and managing budgets, project control reporting, and Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS). Security Clearance

This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire.

Hearing aids without wireless capabilities or wireless that has been disabled are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit/Buffer Space within buildings.
