Job Description Summary

Working with business and executive leadership, identifies, structures, and resolves complex strategic issues in support of the Board of Directors, Chief Executive Officer , and/or Business unit leadership teams. Role oversees the establishment of company objectives, the development of company long-range and strategic plans, and the identification of external industry trends and of company strengths and weaknesses. Role develops business opportunities through thought leadership, collaboration and professional expertise. Sets the integrated strategic plan for a business unit of the company and prioritizes key required supporting efforts. Identifies ways to ensure the long term competitiveness and sustainability of Nationwide businesses. Role is accountable for formulating, planning, evaluating, and articulating the strategic/long range activity of the enterprise.

Job Description

Reports To: SVP- Corporate Strategy.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Lead business unit senior leadership in the creation, communication, execution, and perpetuation of long term strategy. Develop and shape the enterprise and business unit initiatives, goals, and plans in support of strategies.  Identify ways to ensure the long  term competitiveness and sustainability of company businesses. Links strategic planning to operational planning and other ongoing processes. Communicates strategy to key stakeholder (Board of Directors, OCEO, BU executives, and staff units).

2. Lead and facilitate the Corporate Strategic Planning Process, creating a year round discipline across business units and functional offices. Analyzes current and future industry, competitor, and customer opportunities and threats to make recommendations to mitigate uncertainty and risk.

3. Proactively anticipates and identifies strategic issues and opportunities, delivering actionable recommendations and driving executive decisions. Assess new business ventures, inclusive of potential merger/acquisitions, new product lines, customer  segments, etc.  

Breadth Across Enterprise:

Responsible for leadership in the Office of Corporate Strategy-enterprise scope.

Financial Responsibility and Scope:

Manages a wide array of enterprise resources via virtual teams to facilitate collaborative cross-business/cross-functional strategic plans. Direct management of a small team comprised of highly talented and trained strategy and project management professionals.  Minimizing team size and maximizing impact is a goal.

Leadership Accountability:

Developing Strategy: Develop strategy for company including mission and vision, developing alternative corporate strategies that differentiate Nationwide.

Providing Input on Strategic Direction: Provides input on identifying M&A opportunities and other strategies that drive growth.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education/Certification/Licenses: MBA or equivalent preferred. Extraordinary academic accomplishments.

Experience/Skills: Broad experience in strategic consulting and operating experience in the financial services industry preferred. Five plus years of consulting  project experience with a leading consulting firm or a Fortune 100 strategic planning group leading teams in strategic projects. Demonstrated senior executive (CEO) and board level problem solving, communication and influence experience. Expert business knowledge with past record of proven strategic and tactical success. Excellent problem solving skills including the ability to structure complex problems, identify core issues and suggest analyses, synthesize findings and develop actionable recommendations while taking a comprehensive perspective. Excellent communication skills including the ability to effectively facilitate difficult conversations, group discussions, and can coach team  members through difficult facilitation. Creates well structured and clear communicating thoughts, ideas, and concepts. 

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experience may take precedence.

Nationwide pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement within the actual starting salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. If a Sales job, Sales Incentives, based on performance goals are possible in addition to this range.
