Vet Tech Manager
Job Title: Vet Tech ManagerJob Description We are seeking an experienced Vet Tech Manager to provide direct supervision and management of veterinary technician staff. This role involves overseeing specialized services and programs within the Veterinary Services Unit, providing support for technical services and diagnostic lab services, and performing clinical and technical duties as needed. Responsibilities + Supervise and direct the work of up to 8 veterinary technicians. + Plan training and cross-training of staff in collaboration with the RAR Training Team. + Ensure staff implement proper and consistent clinical care for all species and areas within RAR. + Create and maintain work schedules, including weekends and holidays, and coordinate coverage during call-outs. + Provide immediate and annual performance feedback, mentor employees for career growth, and support educational and certification opportunities. + Resolve HR issues for labor-represented employees. + Determine appropriate staffing levels and communicate needs with the manager and counterpart. + Coordinate personnel resources to cover department needs. + Manage hiring for veterinary technician positions as needed. + Co-lead the veterinary technician team in delivering high-level customer service. + Work with RAR clinical veterinarians to refine case management and provide high-quality laboratory animal medicine and care. + Incorporate process improvements for each program with key stakeholders. + Oversee rodent health surveillance, quarantine programs, USDA species procurement, preventative medicine programs, clinical supply inventory, controlled substance program, and pharmacy operations. + Identify opportunities for other specialized programs to refine and strengthen veterinary services. + Provide support and backup for the Technical Services Program and Diagnostic Lab services. + Perform clinical case triaging, management, training, and other technical duties as needed. + Develop and maintain communication and relationships within RAR, including the Operations and Husbandry teams. + Identify areas for improvement in communication and mentor staff to resolve conflicts professionally. Essential Skills + BA/BS degree plus at least five years of experience, or a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least 9 years. + Direct managerial experience of employees for more than 2 years. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Direct managerial experience of bargaining unit employees. + CVT certification. + AALAS Technician Certification (any level). + Experience with regulations, guidance documents, and accreditation programs in the research field (e.g., USDA Animal Welfare Act and Regulations, The Public Health Service Policy and PHS Assurance, OLAW, The Guide, The Ag Guide, and AAALAC International Accreditation). + Excellent communication skills. + Experience working in a university setting with diverse staff, laboratory researchers, and research models. Work Environment This role supports animal studies within 13 different locations. The Vet Tech Manager will report directly to the attending veterinarian and be responsible for ensuring high-quality veterinary care and service for the research community. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $80000.00 - $100000.00 Medical, Vision and Dental benefits offered. "Once hired as a university employee, their health benefits would be active effective the first day of the month following their hire date. So for example, if her university hire date is during the month of June, her benefits would be effective on July 1. They have 30 days from their hire date to sign up for benefits. The university's open enrollment period takes place annually during the month of November, so if she wanted to make changes to her benefits (outside of a qualifying life event) she would have the opportunity to do so each November."
