Utility Designator
Responsibilities:Utility Mapping and Marking: Use state-of-the-art equipment, such as ground-penetrating radar (GPR), electromagnetic locators, and hydro-excavation tools, to locate and mark underground utilities accurately. Ensure markings are clear, visible, and compliant with local and national standards.Documentation: Maintain detailed records of utility locations, including maps, sketches, and digital files. Document all findings, including the type, size, and depth of utilities, and ensure data is accurate and up-to-date.Field Inspections: Conduct thorough site inspections to identify potential conflicts between planned excavations and existing utilities. Provide recommendations for safe excavation practices to prevent damage to underground infrastructure.Stakeholder Communication: Communicate effectively with contractors, engineers, and project managers to discuss utility locations, potential hazards, and safety measures. Provide guidance on best practices for excavation near utilities.Compliance and Safety: Adhere to all safety protocols, regulations, and best practices related to utility locating and excavation. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including One Call notification systems.Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and calibration of locating equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability. Troubleshoot and repair equipment as needed.Training and Support: Train and mentor junior designators and team members on utility locating techniques, equipment use, and safety procedures. Stay current with industry trends and technological advancements.Emergency Response: Respond promptly to emergency situations involving damaged utilities. Assess the situation, implement safety measures, and coordinate repairs with relevant utility companies and emergency responders.Quality Assurance: Conduct quality control checks on utility markings and documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness. Review and verify the work of other designators as part of a quality assurance program.Reporting: Prepare and submit detailed reports, maps, and documentation to clients, regulatory agencies, and internal stakeholders. Ensure all reports are accurate, complete, and submitted in a timely manner.Qualifications:High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification in utility locating or a related field is a plus.2+ years of experience in utility locating, designating, or a related role.Proficiency with utility locating equipment, including GPR, electromagnetic locators, and hydro-excavation tools.Strong knowledge of underground utility systems, including water, sewer, gas, electrical, and telecommunications.Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations related to utility locating and excavation.Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.Strong communication and interpersonal skills.Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Physical stamina and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.Valid driver’s license; CDL is preferred.Certification from a recognized utility locating organization (e.g., NULCA, URISA) is a plus.
