The Opportunity

This position works out of our Abbott Park, IL location in our Transfusion Medicine (TM) division.  Abbott Transfusion Medicine is a global leader of in vitro diagnostics and offers a broad range of innovative instrument systems and tests for hospitals, reference labs, blood banks and clinics. Our products offer automation, convenience, cost-effectiveness, and flexibility.

The Utilities and Construction Engineer will be responsible for providing production support for engineering projects and operations systems. They will focus on the implementation and maintaining of control systems and drawings associated with Facilities, Utilities and Equipment (FUE) supporting the world-wide manufacture of Biologics and Transfusion Instrument test kits to meet daily production schedules.

Focus on facility renovation projects that includes facility and utility changes for CBER licensed manufacturing support areas while having the ability to understanding the impact to and from the equipment and processes that will reside in the construction area scope.

What You’ll Work On

Projects focused on Facilities, Utilities and Equipment (FUE) supporting all site Manufacturing areas including fermentation, biologics production, and automated fill/finish of instrument testing products.

Support continuing production, process development and new product introductions.

Supporting construction of manufacturing systems and electrical control system equipment.

Support validation/commissioning strategies for integrated equipment and systems.

Supporting the installation, validation, and start-up.

Coordinate with internal and external resources to drive innovative technology Proof of Concepts

Support liquid nitrogen and distilled water system design for projects.

Develop and manage automation and controls scope based on user requirements.

​Preparing cost estimates, bid packages, and outlining equipment specifications,

Drive continuous improvement of engineering control systems.

Prepare technical reports, analysis, recommendations, and presentations reflecting the status and results of projects in progress on a regular basis.

Develop, implement, train, and monitor effectiveness of engineering systems and procedures to ensure compliance to FDA, GMP, CBER and all other applicable agency regulations.

Maintains positive and cooperative relationships with the site organizations.

Executes multidisciplined engineering projects that have been approved in the capital plan and/or are a compliance initiative. Generates plans and alternatives for the project execution path then has them approved via a cross functional team. Manages both the project timeline including being accountable for milestone selections and achievement while also managing the project spending with planning and gating updated to multiple organizations monthly.

Determines approach and root cause investigation of facility and utility issues or compliance gaps with these items that impact manufacturing. 

Writes and assembles design through final performance testing documents (URS FS DS IQ OQ OQ) for facility and utility projects.

Mentor’s other engineers on aspects of facility and utility work necessary for the completion of their project activities. Provides tours and plant related engineering information supporting site visitors, auditors, and program requests.

Supports base business engineering activities through implementing continuous improvement ideas supported by the Engineering organization, attending daily huddle meetings, and supporting weekly project update meetings.

Required Qualifications

Bachelors Degree

Minimum 5 years total experience

Minimum 2 years experience with construction and qualification of facilities and utilities.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in FDA regulated manufacturing, consumer packaged goods or similar experience.

Experience with validation or commissioning documentation.

Experience in utility engineering, maintenance, or a related field.

Project management experience.

Experience with biologics processing, filling and inspection technologies strongly preferred.

Experience with validation / qualification of Facilities, Utilities and Equipment (FUE) including process equipment, automated equipment strongly preferred.

Experience with technical troubleshooting and support of both new and aging Facilities, Utilities and Equipment (FUE).

Experience with Lean manufacturing, value stream mapping, and continuous improvement methodologies.

Base knowledge of GMP, ISO, CBER regulations.

Demonstrated success in supporting controls technology transfers of new equipment systems into site operations.

Ability to work in a highly matrixed diverse business environment.

Ability to work effectively within a team in a fast-paced changing environment.

Multi-tasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in timely manner.

Strong organizational, planning, and follow-up skills and ability to hold others accountable.

Ability to travel approximately 10% or less, including internationally.

Understanding of automated building and utility systems as well as Microsoft Project.

The base pay for this position is $75,300.00 – $150,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
