BASIC FUNCTION:

Provide shorter-term counseling and psychotherapy for undergraduate and graduate students experiencing psychological and developmental difficulties with a focus on historically underrepresented and/or marginalized populations using a multicultural and systems perspective. Provide consultation with members of the university community and develop outreach programs to promote mental health and a sense of belonging for all students especially those from underrepresented and/or marginalized populations.

Duties and Responsibilities ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Collaborate with university groups and organizations representing historically underrepresented or marginalized populations. Implement outreach programs focused on underrepresented or underserved populations including support for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color groups and with an emphasis on improving the system-wide university climate as a whole in regard to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.

Speak confidently and knowledgeably to students, faculty, staff, and administrators about multicultural issues. Collaborate with persons of diverse socio-economic, racial/ethnic, international, and LGBTQ+ backgrounds effectively and affirmingly.

Assess the causes and seriousness of a broad range of problems presented by students experiencing psychological and psycho-social difficulties. Develop plans to assist students in dealing with these difficulties. Recommend changes to university practices and policies that may be helpful to students.

Provide culturally resonant counseling and therapy in the form of individual and/or group services directly to our diverse college student community. This may include the delivery of remote services via teletherapy (e.g., Zoom and WebEx) and delivering services in alternate locations on campus.

Assist severely troubled students who are in need of psychiatric consultation, medication, hospitalization, and/or assistance in the management of life-threatening situations.

Assist with the training and supervision of graduate students from the various helping disciplines who intern at the Counseling Center. This will include training and supervision informed by multicultural, systemic, decolonial, and/or other orientations.

Provide consultative assistance to various persons and agencies within the campus community.

Develop and implement outreach programs for prevention of dysfunction and marginalization.

Engage in social justice initiatives and educational programs on campus and virtually.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform other duties as required.

Work a non-standard week (five (5) consecutive days of at least seven (7) hours each, to total no more than thirty-five (35) hours, normally Monday through Friday).

LICENSES, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT:

Current licensure within the State of Rhode Island or ability to obtain within six months of appointment.

Required Qualifications REQUIRED:

1. Earned doctorate in clinical or counseling psychology.

2. Demonstrated experience in a counseling center with young adults (ages 18-24) in a higher education setting.

3. Demonstrated experience with a multicultural population and with one or more underrepresented or underserved populations.

4. Current licensure within the State of Rhode Island or ability to obtain within six months of appointment.

5. Demonstrated experience promoting and enhancing social justice.

6. Demonstrated experience promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.

7. Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in addressing race and racism.

8. Demonstrated experience providing psychotherapy and related services to individuals and groups.

9. Demonstrated knowledge of individual psychopathology and normal developmental challenges with considerations of culture and context.

10. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.

11. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.

12. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.

13. Demonstrated awareness of power differentials and dynamics.

Preferred Qualifications PREFERRED:

1. Demonstrated experience conducting culturally informed outreach programming/presentations.

2. Demonstrated experience leading trainings/workshops relevant to college students from underrepresented populations.

3. Demonstrated experience with the supervision of graduate trainees.
