Title: Union Representative/Organizer-Member Strength

SEIU Local 1000, a progressive public sector labor union is seeking a Union Representative/Organizer for its Member Strength Department. If you’re passionate about organizing, a tireless advocate for the rank-and-file, and excel at both training and education, please apply. The ideal candidate will want to become a dedicated union organizer, be creative in identifying leaders, mobilizing volunteers, and want to become an expert in training. We are recruiting for Norwalk, California.
DUTIES: The required duties, which may or may not be continuously performed, include, but are not limited to, the following:
Identify, recruit, train and develop worksite leaders and stewards. Lead, motivate and mobilize worksite leaders, stewards and members in internal and external organizing, politics, community alliance building and other union activities. Develop and maintain effective communication networks in worksites, including writing and distributing leaflets, notices, newsletters, emails and other materials among worksite leaders, stewards and members. Visit members and potential members at their home. Create and maintain lists and charts, which may include input on, and operation of, computerized database systems. Coordinate strategic campaigns in support of contract campaigns, meet and confers and the resolution of other worksite issues. Serve as the lead staff negotiator in bargaining unit negotiations and meet and confers. Provide training and guidance to negotiating committees. Work with worksite stewards and leaders to represent members through the grievance and arbitration system, as well as mobilizing members to take action around issues in the worksite. Process grievances and appeals up to and including final level of SPB, PERB, NLRB or arbitration, including investigation, preparation of witnesses, exhibits and briefs, and general development of cases.The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
2 years of experience to qualify as an Organizer/Union Representative. Leadership and motivational skills. Effective written, verbal and listening skills. Ability to establish and maintain rapport and credibility with diverse demographic groups, as well as with professional, technical, administrative and service workers. Proficiency in Word, Excel, Power Point, Access and database management. Experience working with tight timelines under pressure and minimal supervision. Ability to work long and irregular hours. Occasional overnight travel required. Valid driver's license, car and insurance. Commitment to social justice and building power for workers.*College degree preferred but not required.
Benefits:
The salary range for this position is $74,940 to $100,092 annually.
