Job Description
Responsible for managing staff at an operational level, provide training and guidance in the processing of complex transactions such as new business, renewals, facultative reinsurance and midterm adjustments, correctly and within laid down timeframes.
Ensure delivery of exceptional customer service
Demonstrate a high degree of underwriting knowledge and processing of transactions, problem solving and involve management in decision making as necessary
Ensure operational effectiveness through aligning the business to the underwriting guidelines
Ensure the implementation of business processes to improve the overall performance of the business
Ensure staff are managed and trained effectively on IT systems
Ensure credit control and related matters are resolved as per the Service Level Agreements
Ensure all transactions including completed facultative reinsurance placement are processed accurately and correctly
Ensure documentation including Sasria is issued, checked, and authorised prior to dispatch as per regulations
Attend to complex accounts queries as per the Standard Operating Procedure and Service Level Agreements with necessary escalation as per the laid down rules
Ensure timeous monitoring and accurate management of mail count of the team as per the Service Level Agreements
Drive interdepartmental discussions on transactions and business issues and make recommendations
Participate in training and mentoring of underwriting support staff
In-depth understanding of specialty business, to fully understand the risk and impact to Specialty department
Ensure all authorisations are completed before month end
Follow up on declarations, monthly/quarterly and annually
Continuous improvement to ensure effective service
Ensure statutory and legislative knowledge is always current in order to resolve customer complaints, to advise the business on corrective solutions to mitigate risks and to improve the customer experience whilst complying with governance requirements.
Ensure adherence to organisational policies, practices, and procedures.
Identify solutions to enhance cost effectiveness and increase operational efficiency
Service delivery to ensure customer satisfaction
Maintain service, quality, and desired outputs within a specific functional process through ensuring compliance to tactical policies, procedures, and standards.
Establish productive operational relationships with key stakeholders in the various channels and administrative teams.
Develop work routines in line with operational plans / schedules in order to manage achievement of service delivery goals.
Share knowledge on, and participate in the creation of new standards, control systems and procedures to maintain service delivery.

Experience Knowledge & Skills Required:
Diploma and/or equivalent NQF Level 7 qualification in general insurance.
More than 10 years’ experience in general insurance.
Candidate should be able to work independently, a great problem solver and live the company values.
Knowledge of re-insurance and processing of facultative reinsurance.
Computer literacy
Manages several underwriting professionals. Reviews and ensures conformance with underwriting policies, guidelines, and procedures by subordinate underwriters. Recommends changes in underwriting policies and procedures. Underwrites the large or more complex risks or provides final approval for those underwritten by subordinates.ResponsibilitiesUnderwriting Insurance CasesReview and underwrite assigned new business and renewal cases within prescribed authority level, escalating unusual or complex cases to senior colleagues where appropriate.
Underwriting AutomationCarry out allocated research and analysis to support the development, testing, and improvement of automated underwriting processes and systems; recommend new functionalities and/or improvements that reduce cost and/or enhance underwriting effectiveness.
Organizational Risk ManagementEnsure the organization is not exposed to undue risks by using risk management systems to achieve specific goals within a designated area of the business.
Regulatory and Compliance ManagementInvestigate all kinds of incidents and reports and provide expert advice to more senior colleagues. Minimize risk exposures and ensure adherence with regulatory standards by working with all internal functions to make sure compliance programs are properly implemented.
Leadership and DirectionCommunicate the local action plan; explain how this relates to the function's strategy and action plan and to the broader organization's mission and vision; motivate people to achieve local business goals.
Performance ManagementDevelop and propose own performance objectives; take appropriate actions to ensure achievement of agreed objectives, using the organization's performance management systems to improve personal performance. Or manage and report on team performance; set appropriate performance objectives for direct reports or project/account team members and hold people accountable for achieving them, taking appropriate corrective action where necessary to ensure the achievement of team/personal objectives.
BudgetingDeliver a budget for an area of the organization or conduct complex analyses on budget progress in other areas of the organization.
Document PreparationEdit document in line with organizational style guidelines and prepare information for publication.
Financial Policies, Guidelines, and ProtocolsDevelop and deliver financial guidelines and protocols to ensure the company complies with regulations and good financial practice.
Organizational Capability BuildingUse the organization's formal development framework to identify the team's individual development needs. Plan and implement actions to build their capabilities. Provide training or coaching to others throughout the organization in own area of expertise to enable others to improve performance and fulfill personal potential.
