This is advanced administrative support work performing a wide variety of clerical duties in a court of law. Typically involves cases where adults are prosecuted for committing crimes (misdemeanor, traffic or felony) and can involve juries and media coverage. The work requires extensive knowledge of clerical practices and procedures and relevant legal terminology used in an adult criminal court of law, involves the use of specialized skills and equipment which is learned on the job or through related experience. Trains, assigns, monitors and reviews the work of new employees. Interactions require courtesy, tact and effectiveness in dealing with others while providing interpretive or advisory information, requesting information or obtaining clarification. The work is semi-routine and involves similar situations requiring choice of correct procedure. The work is performed in courtroom and office environments, where there are some risks and hazards such as exposure to bio-hazardous materials and unpleasant odors, but they are known, predictable and controllable. Exposure to graphic photos and oral content may apply. Work schedule will include working some overtime and weekends; schedule may consist of working twelve consecutive days. The ability to alter starting time to accommodate court schedule may exist. May be required to work in close proximity to adult violent felony offenders in a courtroom. This is a high volume, high pressure, and many times cases heard are under high scrutiny and visibility. Operates standard office equipment including personal computers. The physical demands are not constant; however, workloads are often extremely rigorous and routinely require working for extended periods without a break. May move case file boxes and court evidence weighing up to 25 pounds. The work is performed under general supervision where the work assignments are varied and, although subject to standard practices and procedures, the worker is permitted some latitude to set own priorities subject to supervisor's approval; however, situations requiring the use of judgment will exist. Work in this class is distinguished from that of the Trial Clerk I by its greater volume of cases, computer work and complexity Examples of Work + Prepares, reviews, and modifies docket and calendar of cases. + Prepares and proofs electronic case records and files for court proceedings using court computer system, including hearing type, name of counsel, defendant and case progress. + May work with a different judge within the department on a daily basis. + Inputs and maintains large volumes of court documents/records in computer case management system by the close of business each day. + Accepts, reviews, certifies, conforms and records filing of legal papers and Court Orders in a fast-paced environment. + Answers questions concerning court records, files and other information requested from the Court, Sheriff's Office, State Attorney's, Office and the Public Defenders Office. + Maintains records regarding jury selection and jury trial. + Administers oaths to jurors, interpreters and witnesses. + Accepts, marks, and maintains evidence and exhibits introduced in court. Evidence and testimony may be graphic in nature. + Assists the public in a professional and courteous manner. Records case disposition, court orders and forms for payment of court fees. + Records all jury trial and non-jury trial proceedings including verdicts and sentencing and any information for subsequent preparation of Judgment and Sentence. + Possesses a working knowledge of the fees that apply in various criminal case types. + May collect court fees or fines and records amounts collected. + Prepares judgment and sentences on disposed cases. + Prepares, proofs and e-record judgment and sentences on disposed cases. + Prepares inmate commitment documents. + Maintains chain-of-custody of evidence during jury trials. + Orally publishes the verdict during a jury trial. + Required to sit long periods of time without exhibiting facial expression regarding the publication of graphic exhibits and testimony during trial. + Determines indigent status. + May train, assign, monitor and review the work of new employees. + Dependent upon assignment, may be required to travel to various office locations. + Demonstrates proficiency in the Clerk of the Circuit Court/City of Jacksonville's competencies. + Performs related work as required.
