Description
Under general supervision, performs work involved in the pruning, removing, cultivating and general care of trees and shrubs in streets, municipal parks and parkways, and in general landscape work.
Examples of Duties
+ Prunes and removes trees using roping and rigging techniques.
+ Operates and performs routine maintenance of chainsaws.
+ Plants and transplants young trees and moves larger trees.
+ Prunes trees by cutting off dead branches and limbs to give proper shape and growth.
+ Removes fallen trees and branches in response to storm call emergencies.
+ Operates trucks or other automotive equipment used in forestry or landscape work, as required.
+ Performs duties in accordance with Departmental safety procedures including, but not limited to, the utilization of designated personal protective equipment.
+ Additional responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Qualifications (required):
+ High school Diploma or G.E.D. (General Education Degree)
+ One (1) year of experience in tree and shrub removal and pruning, including roping and rigging, aerial lift operation, chipper and stump grinder operation.
Supplemental Information
LICENSING AND CERTIFICATIONS:
+ Persons certified or promoted to this classification shall be required to obtain and maintain a valid State of Michigan Commercial Driver License (CDL) with a Group B endorsement with air brakes within six months of entry into this class. Such persons shall meet the State of Michigan Driving Eligibility Requirements for application for a CDL at the time of certification or hire to this class, including possessing a valid driver’s license.
+ Successful applicants must meet physical standards prescribed by the Michigan State Motor Carrier Division and must possess and carry a valid current Medical Examiner’s Certificate certifying physical fitness for driving in accordance with State of Michigan Motor Carrier Safety Act-1988.
+ Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on the requirements of the position.
Physical Demands
Work involves frequent walking, standing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, lifting branches and tools/equipment weighing up to 100 pounds and exposure to heights.
Work Environment
Work is performed outdoors with exposure to all seasonal weather conditions.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS
City Employees Retirement System
As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:
• Completion of thirty (30) years of service;
- At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or
- At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.
• In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);
- An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;
