Technology Practice Lead – UK & Ireland

Background:

This is an exciting opportunity to lead Chubb’s Technology Industry Practice in the UK & Ireland. The practice puts the customer and their specific needs as the focus, delivering tailored multi-line products and services through dedicated multi line underwriters.

Role Purpose:

The primary purpose of the role is the management and leadership of the UK & Ireland Technology Industry Practice team and portfolio. It is the ultimate underwriting leader within the region for Tech E&O, cyber, property and casualty lines of business for Technology companies, and will drive strategy to ensure we continue to have a market leading cover and proposition. 

The successful candidate must demonstrate strong competence and experience in the following areas: 

Technical Underwriting Skills. The Manager will be expected to have experience of underwriting Property, Casualty, Tech E&O and Cyber as they relate to Technology Companies, and have a broad understanding of Chubb’s appetite, strategies and wordings, A broad understanding of the Technology Industry and the insurance market including competitor wordings strengths and weaknesses is also required. Ultimately, the role must be capable of holding high levels of underwriting authority and be comfortable taking referral work from the UKI Technology team of dedicated underwriters. Collaboration is required with key stakeholders in product line management and Chubb Overseas General Management to ensure appetite and underwriting strategy is understood and communicated, and underwriters are appropriately empowered.

Planning & Execution. Delivery and execution of the financial plan is a critical responsibility for this role, ensuring that rate, retention, and new business numbers are planned and forecast accurately and that monthly production targets are met. Prepare and execute a business plan for the Practice with key actions and tactics. 

Target Operating Models. The Manager will be required to be lead and actively support adherence to Chubb’s TOMs. This will require an understanding of the Operating Model that Chubb wishes to follow and pro-active execution to achieve the required outcome. Working with team members in the National Underwriting Centre (NUC) and other stakeholders to ensure renewal business migrates effectively in line with TOMs. Knowledge and regular use of Chubb’s underwriting and operational systems will be required. Drive and maintain best practice and disciplines around usage of key operational systems. Look for opportunities to continuously improve our processes to generate operational efficiency.

People Management. Leadership and management of a large team of underwriters, some of whom will be direct reports, others will be dotted line reports based in a branch or the NUC. As well as managing the day to day needs of the team, the role will be required to ensure the talent and development needs of individual underwriters within the team are met. This will include coaching and mentoring the team to achieve collective and individual goals. Navigating periods of change and keeping focus on the importance of continuous improvement. 

Broker and market engagement. Focus on driving retention and growth with brokers. Co-ordinating and engaging team activity around key areas, such as account retention and allocation. It will require focus around driving the pipeline of new business activity with BDMs and Distribution (both from short and long term perspective) to meet plan. An important function is to raise Chubb’s profile as a Technology industry expert. Participation is expected in technical market bodies and would include speaking at client, broker, and industry forums/events. 

Key responsibilities:

Underwriting Referral – act as the main referral point for UKI technology underwriters  Financial - Delivering and exceeding the Technology Practice financial plan. Strategic focus - Working closely with other stakeholders to shape and execute strategy.  Portfolio management - Ensuring quality control within defined area of responsibility by undertaking quantitative underwriting reviews, running regular management meetings and peer reviews. Supporting effective management of the UKI technology portfolio, through regular reporting and task management.  Procedures - Meet company standards in respect of policy documentation, contract certainty and compliance and regulatory requirements.  Compliance - To be responsible for Peer review implementation across the practice and the completion of all audit requirements and actions within agreed timescales and adherence to all legal compliance standards Leadership - Promoting Chubb as a ‘Go to’ market to brokers and clients.  Acting as a senior representative for Industry Practices (both internally and externally), driving the strategic relationships, in terms of trading and execution with all our broking partners. Supporting and encouraging colleagues to drive the business.  Responsible for the strategic and operational management of the team. Product Development - Developing and seeking out new opportunities to innovate within the Technology practice, working with other stakeholders (including other Product lines) to generate new ideas. Regularly conduct and share market research and intelligence. Identify and harness new opportunities  Training/People - Ensure the provision of appropriate training and mentoring support in the team. Ensure there is robust succession planning in place across the practice.  Operational Management - Understanding, interpreting, and communicating to the team effectively the Strategic Priorities of the Practice. Continually monitoring and effectively managing the allocation of resource to meet business objectives, ensuring external priorities and broker needs are constantly at the forefront of our decision-making process. Manage, track and review performance of the team and individual team members. Business Development - Proactively developing relationships with key brokers to ensure profitable and sustainable business growth, in conjunction with distribution and other key stakeholders. Producer Management – Establish and maintain high levels of service to key producers and clients. Monitoring and tracking business acquisition and retention, as well as pro-actively maximising cross-selling opportunities. Digital – Manage the online Technology product, seeking opportunities to grow our SME portfolio Strong multiline underwriting experience across Property, Casualty, Professional Indemnity & CyberExtensive knowledge of the Technology sector, insurance market and competitorsAn experienced professional whose expertise is recognised externally by brokers and clientsExcellent presentation skillsPortfolio management experienceStrong people management and leadership skillsResults driven with ability to make own decisions and work on own initiativeBeing able to demonstrate examples of strategy development and delivery would be desirableAbility to execute and influence at all levels both internally and externally
