BASIC FUNCTION:
Support the operation, maintenance, and advancement of Civil and Environmental Engineering laboratories by ensuring functionality and accessibility of testing equipment and instrumentation while providing guidance for its effective use.
Duties and Responsibilities ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Support the management, upkeep, operation, and potential upgrades of laboratory and field testing equipment in Civil and Environmental Engineering laboratories, considering available resources and department needs.
Tailor laboratory/field testing equipment and experiments for the department, integrating mechanical, material, electrical, and software system components.
Support students in lab courses by assisting with laboratory and field equipment operation, the use of associated software, and facilitating data collection.
Work collaboratively with graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) assigned to undergraduate lab courses, ensuring the preparation and availability of required materials, consumables, and personal protective equipment.
Monitor laboratories to support safety protocols and proper use of laboratory and field equipment while assisting with materials preparation and experimental procedures.
Provide guidance and supervision for enhancements, expansions, and modifications to department laboratories based on program evaluations and assessments.
Supervise the installation of new equipment and facilitate technical and safety training sessions for students, staff, and faculty.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform other duties as assigned.
LICENSES, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT:
Personal computers and printers. Software tools for word processing, data acquisition, and spreadsheet creation. Laboratory and field-testing equipment. Personal protective equipment.
Required Qualifications REQUIRED:
1. Associate’s degree in engineering, technology, physical sciences (such as physics or chemistry), or a related field.
2. Minimum of two years of laboratory experience.
3. Demonstrated experience with engineering laboratory/field equipment and instrumentation.
4. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
5. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.
6. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.
Preferred Qualifications PREFERRED:
1. Bachelor’s or master’s degree in civil and environmental engineering, technology, physical sciences (such as physics or chemistry), or a related field.
2. Demonstrated experience as a teaching assistant or providing instructional support specifically for undergraduate lab courses.
3. Demonstrated familiarity with machining, fabrication, and customization of lab equipment.
4. Demonstrated knowledge of the standards and processes of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
