About the Opportunity 

We are seeking an experienced Technical Safety Lead to join our growing engineering capability for a major new-build project for the UK defence industry. The successful candidate will join our existing engineering team based in our Reading (Winnersh) office. Reporting directly to the project Senior Engineering Manager, you will be accountable for ensuring the engineering design complies with all relevant UK safety and environmental legislation.

You will build a close, collaborative working relationship with technical experts in the client’s assurance and product realization teams. You will develop detailed knowledge of the manufacturing processes and associated hazards, applying your skills and experience to plan, manage and monitor pragmatic compliance with legislation.

This position will require regular attendance to the client’s operating sites near Reading and Jacobs engineering design offices in Stockton-on-Tees. Work-life balance and flexibility are a key focus for Jacobs and we are happy to discuss working patterns and locations that suit both you and our business. We are also willing to consider candidates who are happy to work a reduced 4-day working week, if they have the right skills and experience.

Your responsibilities will include\:

•    Providing assurance oversight to ensure our design teams are complying with all relevant UK safety and environmental legislation;
•    Providing advice to the framework leadership team and project management teams on legislative compliance, including monthly reporting and escalation of signifcant issues;
•    Working alongside our appointed CDM Principal Designer to ensure we have a robust plans for achieving regulatory compliance;
•    Leading and driving continuous improvement in regulatory compliance best practice across the framework.

Here’s What You’ll Need 

Essential Qualifications & Experience\:

•    HND or degree qualified in a relevant engineering discipline, with a minimum of 15 years’ experience in industry; professional membership of an appropriate engineering institution (e.g. IChemE, ICE, IMechE, IEE, IET).
•    Excellent working knowledge of UK safety legislation relevant to process and manufacturing facilities.
•    Ability to work effectively as a team member liaising directly with clients and other cross-functional team members with excellent verbal and written communication and report-writing skills.
•    Ability to achieve a minimum UK ‘SC’ security clearance.
