The Office of the Chief Financial Officer - Treasury division is accepting applications for a Tax Examiner II position. Position Summary Under general supervision the Tax Examiner II is an entry-level paraprofessional within the City of Detroit Office of the Chief Financial Officer that requires significant direction and supervision. The Tax Examiner plans and completes tax investigations and analyses. Key services include but are not limited to: discussing issues, tax laws, and regulations with taxpayers; assisting with payment arrangements and tax collection; submitting findings for supervisory review; and performing related research and investigative duties as assigned. Examples of Duties + Identifies irregularities or discrepancies in record keeping, controls, or operations of a specific area + Contacts taxpayers by mail, telephone, or on-site to address discrepancies and to request supporting documentation + Monitor, and prioritize assigned clerk activity on a daily and monthly basis + Investigate and identify irregularities or discrepancies in postings, record keeping, and controls + Negotiate settlements on accounts receivables and property tax accounts weekly + Ability to analyze different tax types, including Personal Property, NEZ, OPRA, CRA, IFT, etc. + Learn all necessary software, including DPP.net, Oracle Fusion, Lockbox, DivDat, Smartsheet, among others + Work interdepartmentally to ensure proper data of all billing information + Possess very good skills in Excel, internet research, professional business interaction, and organized presentation of materials + Interact with all departments regarding Accounts Receivable (A/R) + Provide quality customer service + Prepare and submit monthly metrics on Revenue Collections Branch activities to Supervisor + Performs special projects and other duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications Education Completed High School graduation or General Educational Development (GED) certificate. An associate's degree from an accredited college or university is preferred but not required. New hires will be required to have completed an associate's degree from an accredited college or university with at least 8semester (12 term) credits of coursework in accounting or a related field. Experience In addition to the minimum education requirements, the following experience requirements also apply: For selection, appointment to a Tax and Revenue Examiner level 2, in addition to the minimum education requirements, more progressive levels of experience are required based on the following: Tax and Revenue Examiner 2 – at least two (2) years of experience involving the examination and evaluation of the accounting, financial, operational, or control records of public agencies, private organizations, or individuals Equivalency Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be substituted to meet the education and experience requirements of this position.
