Tax Director of Information Reporting and Withholding

About your Team:

The Interactive Brokers Global Tax Team serves an important role in the success of our business. We mitigate risk and create value for our business and our customers. We partner with many functions across the company, including Accounting, Treasury, Technology, Client Service and Marketing, to assist our business in achieving our commitment to delivering value through technological innovation and providing our clients with unprecedented access to global markets at the lowest cost. The Global Tax Team sets the tax policy for the company and identifies, develops, implements, and manages tax strategies to help minimize our overall tax cost. We advise customers on the US and international tax aspects of our product offerings, manage tax audits, and ensure financial reporting and tax returns are filed timely and accurately.

We are looking for a Tax Director to lead our Customer Tax team and be responsible for all relevant information reporting and withholding tax matters from a client perspective. This global role will report directly to the Global Head of Tax. The person must have a solid technical and operational background in the information reporting and withholding tax areas. The person will interact extensively with key non-tax business executives throughout the organization. A successful candidate must be a collaborative team player, an entrepreneur, a detail-oriented person, and an excellent communicator.

 

What will be your responsibilities within IBKR: 

Lead the Customer Tax team to ensure: Compliance with US federal, state, and non-US requirements that relate to client tax reporting, withholding tax, and tax documentation, including but not limited to periodic and year-end IRS Forms 1099 and 1042 in the US and applicable forms in foreign countries where IBKR operates. Adequate documentation is obtained from customers, including but not limited to W-8 or W-9 in the US and applicable forms in foreign countries where IBKR operates. Timely tax support is provided to customers and sales personnel. Research and analyze new product offerings, venue launches, and client impact, and determine tax information reporting and withholding tax requirements. Draft tax information reporting and withholding functional requirements to the software development team. Monitor, research and analyze new laws and changes to existing laws that may impact customer information reporting and withholding tax. Manage US state, federal and non-US penalty waivers and audits related to client information reporting and withholding tax. Collaborate with other Global Tax colleagues to comply with client-related tax requirements, such as financial transaction tax, GST and VAT. Working with the software development team, identify and design system improvements that automate processes related to customer tax documentation, information reporting and withholding tax. Work on special projects and administrative matters, including process development, building relationships with business units, and budget development and management. Assist with research, development and integration of new tax technologies, including tax data collection and automation. Develop a solid understanding of IBKR’s business and product offerings. Support Internal Audit/Risk Reviews.

To be successful in this position, you will have the following:

Strong tax technical background, with a minimum of 15 years experience in the information reporting and withholding tax areas, both in the US and globally; minimum of 5 years experience in the financial services industry Strong knowledge of financial products, including investment funds and various tax-advantaged savings accounts such as IRAs and similar products in other countries J.D. is strongly preferred Basic knowledge of Tax Accounting, in particular, U.S. GAAP accounting Strong analytical skills Advanced MS Office skills, particularly MS Excel Excellent writing skills Strong business communication skills with the ability to effectively convey functional requirements to software developers Strong consensus builder and team player Strong commercial and business awareness
