Job SummaryThis job provides high-touch, customer-oriented IT support at the College of Pharmacy at the University of Michigan. Customers include faculty, staff, and students in administrative, academic, and research environments. Successful applicants should have a high level of effective communication knowledge and written and verbal experience to quickly offer appropriate assistance that corresponds to a customer's ability, with the appropriate priority. The primary role is under general supervision and is responsible for installing, configuring, securing, and maintaining operating systems of research workstations and servers, including web servers, supporting business processing requirements. Performs software installations and upgrades to operating systems and layered software packages. Schedules installations and upgrades and maintains them in accordance with established IT policies and procedures. Monitors and tunes the system to achieve optimum performance levels. Ensures workstation/server data integrity by evaluating, implementing, and managing appropriate software and hardware solutions. Ensures data/media recoverability by implementing a schedule of system backups and database archive operations. Supports media management through internal methods and procedures or through offsite storage and retrieval services. Develops and promotes standard operating procedures. Conducts routine hardware and software audits of workstations and servers to ensure compliance with established standards, policies, and configuration guidelines. Develops and maintains a comprehensive operating system hardware and software configuration database/library of all supporting documentation. The position will serve as the liaison between the College of Pharmacy and Advanced Research Computer services on campus and will support the College's high-performance research computing needs.
Responsibilities*50% - System Administration: Linux (RedHat, CentOS, Ubuntu) server, workstation, and disk array administration, including virtual servers (MiServer). Windows Server and research workstation administration. Supporting traditional Windows workstations connected to lab instrumentation that do not align with our standard administrative Miworkspace desktop support model. Monitor systems for availability, error conditions, and performance. Enterprise Infrastructure Administration - Assist with configuring, managing, and troubleshooting enterprise infrastructure services such as Networking (DNS, DHCP, Firewall) and various third-party (vendor) services.20% - Problem resolution and resource consulting. Perform root-cause analysis by investigating, analyzing, and resolving system problems, poor performance, and error conditions. Resolve user/system problems and help guide continued infrastructure development. Serve as the liaison between the College of Pharmacy and Advanced Research Computer services on campus and will support the College's high-performance research computing needs.15% - Security Compliance. Perform security remediation, such as patching and configuration tuning. Validate system configurations. Participate in continuous monitoring efforts, risk assessments, and remediation.15% - Participate in strategic planning, training, and continued professional development. Assist in evaluating and selecting computing technology; develop and present training on system use; write technical documents; participate in strategic planning. Stay current with relevant advances in technologies. This could include on-the-job training, attending technical courses or conferences, reading, researching, and testing. Develop and follow best practices and procedures and share knowledge.Required Qualifications*Bachelor's degree in computer science or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated knowledge in administering Linux and related computer systems in a multiple-platform network environment. Specific knowledge and experience with RedHat and Ubuntu Linux, Virtual Machines, and Windows Server. Experience with Linux-based computational clusters. Experience with high availability clusters. Experience in server/workstation administration in a distributed scientific research environment. RAID and disk array support. Experience with high-level scripting and programming languages. Demonstrated strong ability to communicate with customers and co-workers effectively. Demonstrated knowledge in administering Windows network services. Provide Windows and Macintosh research support desktop support not covered by Miworkspace administration staff. Provide basic iPhone, iPad & Android support to university-shared services. Experience working in higher education in a support capacity.
