The IMDS (International Material Data System) is the automobile industry's material data system. In the IMDS, all materials present in finished automobile manufacturing are collected, maintained, analyzed, and archived. IMDS facilitates meeting the obligations placed on automobile manufacturers, and thus on their suppliers, by national and international standards, laws, and regulations.
Suppliers in the automotive supply chain record material data into IMDS system. Every part in every car produced by every participating auto manufacturer will have an entry on the database listing size, weight, and materials, and customers are able to follow parts back to OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer) all the way up to the supplier.
