Surgical Skills Lab Coordinator – UPMC Harrisburg

Purpose:
Oversee the overall mission of the UPMC of Central PA Surgical Skills Labs. Will also coordinate the day-to-day operations of the surgical skills labs, develop curriculum and function as Faculty Liaison.

Responsibilities:

Administer all activities in and for the PHS Surgical Skills Labs. This includes maintenance of scheduling calendar, monitoring supplies, maintaining records and maintaining an orderly work environment in the lab for its staff, learners, faculty and customers Ensures simulators and all equipment is in working order, contacting vendors and Biomed when maintenance and/or repair is required. Responsible for directing staff in setting up/cleaning up facilities as needed by learners. Work with support staff by providing educational training to them as necessary to ensure lab efficiency and success. Effectively delegates responsibilities to the appropriate individuals. Works closely with Biomed, IS and AV to ensure equipment is in proper working order and all maintenance or repairs are either handled in a timely manner or potential optional equipment provided? Responsible for the General Surgery Residency Boot Camp program from design, development, implementation, content organization, didactic presentation and faculty participation? Promotes collaboration of disciplines, nursing and allied health to coordinate clinical education and ensure global education and standards within PHS. Engages Program Directors from other disciplines to utilize the lab for the educational enhancement of all PHS residency programs. Collaborates with the Surgical Services Department at their request to provide lab support for continuing education courses Maintains a dynamic relationship with Surgical Services Nurse Professional Development Specialists to provide support and education for the orientation process of new employees in regards to clinical education Provides orientation to general surgery residents doing a partial rotation at PHS. Develops, maintains, coordinates and teaches the Medical Student Orientation and Skills Lab Program. Responsible for the development of appropriate metrics and applying them to selected courses and course evaluations. Responsible for the continued development of new simulation modules and timely implementation of those modules into the Surgical Skills Lab Curriculum. Develops and maintains all programs associated with the smooth functioning of the Surgical Skills Labs All educational programs, curricula, and modules. Work with Robotic Committee Chairperson to attend Center of Excellence accreditation for Robotic Surgery Research programs with general surgery residents Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery Program Fundamentals of Endoscopic Surgery Program Cadaveric Courses Coordinate CME programs with CME Manager Community Outreach Programs Assessment Programs Coordination of grant requests with the PHS Foundation Under the direction of the Program Director development, implementation and evaluation of the following: surgical skills lab curricula and modules, and, surgical simulation lab curricula, and modules. In accordance with the American College of Surgeons Comprehensive Education Institutes Criterion. Maintain a working relationship with and obtain feedback from teaching faculty to ensure appropriate level teaching and distinctive and suitable programs for each resident level as well as unique resident deficiencies. Supervise resident credentialing for procedures and Robotics Curriculum Develops and maintains a Policy and Procedure manual that provides for the safety of all lab users and staff. Ensures compliance with existing PHS P&P by working directly with inspection teams to provide a safe working and learning environment. Performs other duties as assigned. Provides Skills Lab Assessment and education remediation to PMSCO/Lifeguard and any future outside educational contracts
