Surgical Assistant II

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Surgical Assistant II is responsible for performing the duties of moving surgical equipment and furniture, cleaning tasks, linen supply management, schedule distribution, errands and ensuring effective communication between him or herself, the managers, the patient, peers and other staff, physicians and other hospital departments.  Is a resource for simple and complex equipment room set-ups.  Assists in maintenance of a safe and clean environment. Identifies specific needs of the patient and anesthesia care provider in relation to anesthesia supplies needed prior, during, and after a surgical procedure, in collaboration with an anesthesia care provider. Reports to the Clinical Nurse Manager.

 

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Must have certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support upon hire or receive certification within the 90 Day Introductory Period and maintain clinical competency during employment with ECHN in this role.

 

EXPERIENCE:

Experience as a Surgical Assistant I.

 

COMPETENCIES:

Must be able to read and communicate effectively in English. Basic Computer skills.

               Job-Specific Competency Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and promotes positive patient outcomes. Communicates appropriately and clearly to team leader, co-workers and other members of the health care team. Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations. In collaboration with surgical team, participates in activities to accomplish efficient room turnover including, cleaning of floor, furniture and equipment; removal of used equipment supplies instrumentation, providing appropriate equipment for next procedure. Maintains the cleanliness and supply levels of assigned work areas before and after procedure. Stocks all designated areas including linen, oxygen equipment and cleaning supplies. Unpacks and put away supplies delivered to OR front desk area. Obtains beds & stretchers according to procedure & specific patient needs.  Independently and safely transports patients to and from designated areas. Assists the nursing staff with patient care as needed in assigned areas. Performs Clips reps, on male patients according to procedure. Supports efficient department operations, answers phone and effectively communicates messages to appropriate individual. Demonstrates knowledge of Infection Control policies for Anesthesia/O.R. equipment; appropriately and independently cleans, and identifies need for repair of anesthesia equipment; communicates issues to Nurse Manager. Demonstrates knowledge of advanced/complex room and equipment set up, i.e. shoulder and knee positioners, robotics, minimally invasive set-ups. Maintains par levels of anesthesia/O.R. supplies and medications; orders supplies and medications as needed, unpacks and puts away; communicates supply issues to Nurse Manager. Checks and fills anesthesia carts with nets and supplies in the OR, OB and GI units. Maintains tissue freezer and temperature logs in compliance with regulatory standards. Performs daily tissue test, checks temperature and relative humidity in OR suites. Is a resource for equipment and room set up. Acts as a mentor, precepting other employees in the Surgical Assistant I role. Is able to work independently, to validate and verify inventory and medications.
