Job Description

Job Summary

Assists in the nursing care and preparation of surgical patients.  Functions as a member of the sterile team by creating and maintaining a sterile field.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Anticipates and issues instruments to surgeons.

• Demonstrates ability to multi-task during procedures.

• Assists in transporting patients.

• Prepares tables, instruments and supplies required for specific operations, maintaining aseptic technique.

• Assists in prepping (when indicated) and draping of patients and operative area.

• Prepares and participates in preoperative counts of instruments, sponges and sharps, maintaining correct count.

• Assists in positioning patients, equipment and application of dressings and/or casts.

• Processes and packages equipment, instruments and supplies for decontamination and sterilization.

• Cleans carts and rooms immediately following procedures.

• Restocks and replaces linens and supplies in operating rooms and storage areas.

• Participates in performance activities and educational activities.

• Performs other duties as necessary or assigned.

• Complies with the Corporate Compliance Policy and all laws, regulations, and Standards of Conduct relating to the position and agrees to report any suspected violations of law or Standards of Conduct.

• Complies with all applicable state and federal regulations.

• Maintains a safe work environment using safe work practices, utilizing standard precautions and complying with hazardous waste procedures at all times as described in St. Anthony's Safety Manual.

• Maintains the confidentiality of patient, resident, tenant, employee and organizational information.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

• High school graduate or general education degree (GED).

• Certificate from college or technical school preferred.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before customers, patients, families and employees of the organization.

Position Requirements, Certifications, Licenses, Registrations.

• Completion of approved Operating Room Technician program and/or appropriate on-the-job training or past experience.

• BCLS certification within three months of employment.
