Supervisory Technologist and Interventional Radiology
Summary This position is located at the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center and is directly supervised by the Radiology Imaging Program Administrator. Incumbent is responsible for the supervision, coordination, performance, training and technical operation in the General Diagnostic Radiology Section and Interventional Radiology and performs technical work in support of Diagnostic Radiology under the direction of a physician. They will work closely with the PACS Administrator, radiologists, nurses, clinicians and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic exam results and patient satisfaction. Incumbent ensures the effective operation of the General Diagnostic Radiology and Interventional Radiology to meet the needs of the service - this includes staffing, assignments, workflow, and scheduling administration. Incumbent will distribute workload; maintain the work to ensure that all members of the Imaging Section properly adhere to policies and procedures developed by the Radiology Service and the Medical Center, when applicable. Incumbent will serve as the liaison to the primary clinical instructors for the affiliated Radiology program students assigned to Imaging Service. The working supervisor operates various general radiography units, including portable x-ray, fluoroscopy units and O-arm. The supervisor/ technologist will be proficient in the modality of general radiography. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The supervisor works under the general direction of the Imaging Program Administrator. Incumbent has overall responsibility to directly supervise the General Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology sections of the Radiology Service at the Ann Arbor VAMC. As a technical specialist, the incumbent independently carries out assignments, coordinates the work with others, and keeps the Administrative Officer and the Imaging Program Administrator informed of potential problems in meeting patient needs. The supervisor makes assignments by defining objectives, priorities, and deadlines and assists the employee with unusual situations that do not have clear precedents. The employee plans and carries out the successive steps and handles problems and deviations in the work assignments in accordance with instructions, policies, previous training, or accepted practices in the occupation. Completed work is usually evaluated for technical soundness, appropriateness, and conformity to policy and requirements. The methods used in arriving at the end results are not usually reviewed in detail. Qualifications Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. [In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.] Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the 2 equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] [NOTE: Assignment to the clinical program director requires meeting JRCERT minimum educational standards as noted in the assignment description.] Interventional Radiography (IR). Technologists working in this special assignment may function as vascular interventional (VI), cardiac interventional (CI) and/or cardiovascular-interventional (CV) technologists which use specialized equipment to perform diagnostic angiographic procedures and complex vascular and nonvascular interventional and therapeutic procedures. This specialty requires additional knowledge of vascular systems and major vessel anatomy. The technologist must be knowledgeable in the specialized equipment employed for digital subtraction systems and interventional procedures. The technologist administers contrast media under the supervision of the staff radiologist and confers with the radiologist to establish requirements regarding contrast agents, vital signs, medications, and physiologic monitoring to perform procedures. IR technologist must be knowledgeable in digital imagining and PACS. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS 11 Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. The incumbent functions as section supervisor for a group of advanced DRTs at the GS-10 level and below, which may include support staff. The incumbent evaluates new products and equipment and makes recommendations to the supervisor concerning upgrades/new purchases that would improve operations. The incumbent develops and maintains protocol manuals for procedures performed in the section. The incumbent is responsible for implementation and adherence to all safety practices and policies for the section. The incumbent directs the development and implementation of services and treatment to patients through the supervision, mentoring, and oversight of assigned clinical staff. Experience must demonstrate practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs: i. Ability to analyze organizational, technical, and administrative problems and to develop and implement solutions that result in efficient section operation. ii. Ability to analyze and use data effectively to manage section workload, quality, performance, and productivity. iii. Skill in problem solving and conflict resolution. iv. Ability to supervise technologists performing a wide variety of difficult radiographic exams (CT, MRI, Special Procedures, Mammography, Ultrasound). v. Ability to interview and evaluate candidates for positions, evaluate subordinate performance, recommend appointments, advancements, or recommend or take appropriate disciplinary actions. vi. Skill in participating in organizational facility initiatives, workgroups, and/or committees. Preferred Experience: Current working knowledge/experience performing General Radiology exams, including OArm, portables, GI, Ortho studies, Previous Supervisory experience, Must be ARRT registered.
