Supervisor of Animal Resources- AZ- Animal Care

Summary

The Supervisor of Animal Resources is responsible for the supervision of the care and maintenance of the small Animal Research Facilities.  Some direction in job responsibilities may also be provided by the consulting veterinarian.  This position reports to the Associate Director, Research Operations. This individual will be required to work weekends and holidays on a rotation basis.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Supervisor of the Animal Resources Technicians and facility on a daily basis. Maintaining animal resources in accordance with current federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to laboratory animals. Updating knowledge on current federal, state, and local regulations and where to obtain additional or current regulatory information. Observing or detecting alterations in animal room environment including temperature, air exchange and light cycles. Recognizing common signs of clinical illness in laboratory animals. Assist Animal Resources Technicians and Senior Animal Resources Technicians in daily husbandry care of laboratory animals in a safe and sanitary manner using equipment under established procedures. Ordering animals, animal food, bedding, and supplies as back up for Senior Animal Resources Technician.  Handling, restraining, and determining the sex of all common laboratory animals. Gathering monthly census information for Associate Director. Oversee cage card activation and deactivation, in InfoEd management software Obtaining blood sampling & other sampling for bi-annual sentinel testing, or for investigators as needed Assisting with various methods of animal identification and maintenance of accurate records. Observing and reporting irregularities in laboratory animals such as variation in dietary habits, abnormal stool or urine specimens, unusual behaviors, and deaths. Work in cage wash area Provide tour of facilities to new faculty, staff and students Providing general technical assistance for investigators, technicians, students as needed. Providing routine treatments as instructed including procedures such as ear mite medication and clipping of overgrown teeth. Maintaining personal hygiene and following various sanitation procedures when moving between various animal rooms. Ex-Officio member of Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) on respective campus Performing other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities                                                    

Supervise full time Animal Care Technicians & Senior Animal Care Technicians.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience                                                   

Bachelor’s degree required.  5-7 years’ experience in professional animal care setting with small animal handling experience with ALAT (Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician) & LAT (Laboratory Animal Technician) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) required. LATG (Laboratory Animal Technologist) certification a plus. One year of experience leading or mentoring a team.  Good written and oral communications required. 

Computer Skills                                               

Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). 

Language Skills                                                

Basic skills:  Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Reasoning Ability                                             

Intermediate skills:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Mathematical Ability

Basic skills:  Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret bar graphs.

This position requires the ability to work with animals.
