Position Summary

This position coordinates and oversees the day-to-day activities and performance of assigned Environmental Services Project Support Staff and Contractors who support Xcel Energy’s future generation development, as we continue our journey to carbon-free emissions, and base capital projects.  This position will personally contribute and effectively collaborate with other groups planning the generation assets and grid of the future.  The position will provide and coordinate support from Environmental Services Subject Matter Experts during the development, design, and construction phases of new renewable and fossil generation projects and supports transmission line project construction activities in the Northern States Power service territory (ND, SD, MN, WI, and MI).  As a Supervisor, this position will be responsible for hiring, providing performance feedback/coaching, and ensuring the development of full-time employees and contracted support staff.
Experience in developing renewable technologies (wind, solar, and storage) and/or supporting capital projects is necessary for the successful candidate.  Advanced knowledge of environmental regulations, and utility operations and their influence and application to project development, siting, permitting, and construction is essential.


Essential Responsibilities

Directs and coordinates day-to-day activities of a team of technical employees and/or outside contractors. Focuses on subset of an environmental discipline such as air quality, chemistry, water quality/resources, solid and hazardous waste, remediation or water resources. Conducts performance evaluations and makes human resource decisions related to hiring and discipline. Maintains budget and associated budget expenditures.

Consults on the design, implementation and progress of programs to ensure corporate compliance with chemistry, environmental, and water resource regulations. Monitors the development/maintenance of department and business unit process procedures, performs reviews, and provides comments. Ensures corporate support at regulatory inspections and subsequent follow-ups. Provides advice and consultation to corporate compliance staff and facility on internal audit findings. Monitors type and quality of data and information reported to regulators.

Monitors and prepares project scoping documents, requests for proposals, bid documents for chemistry, environmental and water resource related projects involving outside contractors and consultants. Manages or oversees the management of projects and consultants. Projects are in $100,000 + range.

Monitors, analyzes, and implements developments from both within and outside the company and provides technical advice and guidance to stakeholders and business units. Reviews technical literature attends industry meetings and seminars and performs personal technical research.

Contributes to the development of the company's chemistry, environmental and water resource related policies, standards, strategic planning, operating guidelines and budgets.

Reviews, analyzes and implements pertinent regulations and legislation, policies, issues either existing or proposed by federal, state or local government entities.

Works with regulatory agencies task forces and commissions on issues relating to business unit activities. Prepares and/or presents testimony to regulators, commissions and industry task forces.


Minimum Requirements

BS/BA in environmental science, chemistry, engineering, applied science or related fields and six (6) years of progressively more responsible chemistry and/or environmental related work experience.

Two years experience in managing or leading project and/or process improvement teams.

Experience with and knowledge of chemistry and/or environmental regulations, remedial procedures, audit procedures, and power generation processes. Demonstrated skills in technical writing, verbal communication, and negotiations.

Non-Bargaining

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $95,200.00 to $135,200.00 per year
