HDR is looking for a Substation Design Technician to join our growing and nationally ranked team of Power Delivery professionals in our Raleigh, NC office.

The primary duties of the Substation Design Technician include preparation of engineering drawings, calculations, reports and designs for electrical substations (Low, Medium and High Voltage) and substation systems to support engineers. The Substation Design Technician will work to perform substation design tasks, CADD design, develop design drawings and documents, modeling and/or analysis, prepare material lists, perform field reviews, and other tasks for simple to moderately complex projects. Based upon experience, the Substation Design Technician can perform most design responsibilities without assistance on simple to moderately complex projects and may work independently but with some engineering guidance on complex projects.

Experience in Protection and Controls Design aspects of High Voltage (HV) Substations with knowledge of Substation Physical design.Knowledge and experience with substation PC design including One Line Diagrams, three line diagrams, Relay and Control Systems Schematics, Wiring Diagrams, Material Lists (BOM), and cable schedules.Understands client standards, and completes small projects and some complex tasks, exercising judgment in design criteria, evaluation, and design, subject to review by engineers.Communicate with Project Managers and Project Engineers.

Preferred Qualifications

Proficiency using Microsoft Office, AutoCAD and raster CAD. MicroStation proficiency and 3D experience is a plus. Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm or utility desired.Ability to work closely with engineering staff, and interface with client engineers, designers and document control staff. Experience in both the Protection and Control (Indoor) and Physical (Outdoor) aspects of High Voltage (HV) Substation design.Experience with substation design including One Line Diagrams, General Arrangements Sections, Grounding Conduit Plans, Foundation Plans, Material Lists (BOM), Relay and Control Systems Schematics and Wiring Diagrams.Ability to independently make design and engineering decisions for low to moderately complex projects with minimal oversight.Ability to work directly with clients.Preference given to candidates local to the Raleigh, NC area.An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must.

Technical degree or a combination of education and related industry experienceA minimum of 5 years related industry experienceAdvanced skillset of 3D design software and document management infrastructureAdvanced skillset of 3D Coordination toolCompetency of Microsoft Office products and communication toolsAdvanced understanding of engineering or architectural conceptsKnowledge of industry standards and practices, along with discipline codes and specificationsExcellent communication skills, attention to detail and organizational traits are essential
