**Department/Program Description:** The Program in Data Science is the new interdisciplinary undergraduate major in Data Science that launched in September 2022, offering a B.S. in Data Science (formerly named Mathematical and Computational Science) and a B.A. in Data Science and Social Systems. The program’s mission is to provide students with an analytical and quantitative foundation for tackling data driven problems in science, industry, and society. The curriculum includes courses in mathematics, computer science, statistics, engineering, and the social sciences. Students also have the opportunity to pursue research or other creative projects within the major as part of their capstone requirement.
**Position Summary** : The Program in Data Science seeks a Student Services Specialist (SSS) to provide administrative and operational support to faculty and students on issues regarding major advising, academic services, and registrar services. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to work in a new and rapidly growing undergraduate major. The SSS is a key member of the administrative team, supporting approximately 207 undergraduate majors and minors.
Under the direction of the Student Services Officer, the SSS will resolve routine issues of limited scope within their own work area using general guidelines and standards or precedents as reference. The SSS advises current and prospective majors and minors on degree requirements, planning their program of study, and appropriate course substitutions. The SSS maintains academic records and monitors degree progress, which includes student fulfillment of major requirements, and provides approval recommendations to the faculty Co-Directors for graduating seniors.
The SSS will work with the DS program faculty and staff on the development of new processes and policies to manage the major more effectively. This includes, but is not limited to, providing suggestions on procedural changes, major requirements, and curriculum updates. The SSS will assist the SSO with hiring, training, and guiding part-time student workers (Peer Advisors) who will assist with advising, degree progress, and event coordination.

This is a 100% FTE, continuing, non-exempt position. This position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting (hybrid of working on-site and off-site), subject to operational need.

CORE DUTIES:
● Maintain academic records and monitor degree progress.
● Serve as a subject matter resource to students and other departments.
● Coordinate logistics for outreach activities, meetings, and events.
● Help manage program’s newsletter and social media to communicate important information to students.
● Respond to routine inquiries from students, faculty, external constituents, and staff.
● Review documents and forms for completeness, track files for follow up and distribute for review.
● Research and resolve routine issues, refer complex issues to other staff.
● Input data, update electronic databases, web sites, literature, and associated materials. May collect, gather and validate data, prepare basic reports.
● Contribute to general office administration and process improvements.
● May train and direct day to day activities of student and temporary workers.
* Other duties may also be assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Associate's degree and one year of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
● Strong written and verbal communication skills.
● Basic computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office and Google Suites.
● Customer service skills.
● Basic office administration skills.
● Ability to learn compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.
In addition, preferred requirements include:
● Bachelor’s degree preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
● Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
● Occasionally stand, walk, twist, use fine manipulation, grasp, use a telephone, write by hand, sort and file paperwork, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

The expected pay range for this position is $32.87 -$39.23 per hour.
