Position Summary / Career Interest:The Student Polysomnography Technologist works under the direct supervision of the Sleep Center Medical Director and a Registered Polysomnography Technologist (RPSGT) to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. All duties completed by the Student Polysomnography Technologist will be validated and oversigned by an RPSGT. The Student Polysomnography Technologist performs diagnostic polysomnograms (sleep studies) in accordance with standards established by The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). Examples are full diagnostic polysomnograms, polysomnograms with appropriate montage derivations, multiple sleep latency tests and maintenance of wakefulness tests. Therapeutic modalities for sleep disorders applied during the course of a study include oxygen, CPAP, bi-level pressure, and oral devices to evaluate optimal treatment for each individual patient. CPAP/BIPAP desensitization will also be performed. Additional neurologic evaluations during sleep may be performed as requested. Student Polysomnography Technologists are expected to learn how to master standardized study scoring and reporting methodology subject to validation by the Center Supervisor. Furthermore, a firm understanding of policies and procedures and performance improvement projects as well as functions of daily lab operations are expected.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

Consistently meets work schedule.All other duties as assigned.Demonstrates expertise in working with equipment required to perform and score polysomnograms. Studies produced are always of the highest quality.Demonstrates ability to accurately estimate sleep quality, respiratory index and identify arousals in real time when monitoring two patients at once.Demonstrates ability to alleviate patient fears and concerns to perform a successful mask fitting. Consistently follows departmental protocols and executes sound clinical decision-making in implementing appropriate therapeutic interventions. Consistently achieves optimal patient outcome in titrating therapeutic modalities; Medical Director consistently supports decision(s) made during study.Scores studies of basic and high complexity with consistently high precision and reliability. Shows desire to continue learning and performing at a higher level by interacting with sleep physicians on a frequent basis. Demonstrates very detail-oriented, conscientious approach; consistently obtains a high (90% or greater) score when inter-scorer reliability is evaluated.Uses excellent customer service skills (i.e. patience, effective listening, empathy) when introducing the patient to PAP therapy. Provides effective, on-going patient education to enhance compliance with therapy. Actively listens to any patient complaints and makes every effort to alleviate patient discomfort (i.e. adjusting humidity to patient interface, correcting leaks, addressing skin creases, pressure points, refitting mask, and addressing the issue of claustrophobia with patience, skill and empathy).Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.These statements are intended to describe the essential functions of the job and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities. Preferred Education and Experience

Enrollment in a CAAHEP or CoARC accredited polysomnography education program


Required Licensure and Certification

Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) within 7 days of hire


Preferred Licensure and Certification

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - American Heart Association (AHA)
