Posting Details Posting Information Requisition 202400372ST Title Student Employee-Dept of Sociology-ASC Writing Tutor for Sociology Employee Class Student Employee College Work Study Position No Department Dept of Sociology Division Division of Academic Affairs Hours per week 20 Hiring Rate $12/hr Preferred Student Classification Nature & Purpose of Position The Sociology Departmentat Sam Houston State University is seeking dedicated and passionate Writing Tutors to assist students in enhancing their writing skills across a variety of academic subjects. The primary goal of the ASC is to empower students to become more confident and effective writers by providing personalized, one-on-one tutoring and small group instruction. Tutors will support students through all stages of the writing process, from brainstorming and drafting to revising and editing.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide individualized and small group writing tutoring sessions for SHSU students. Assist with writing assignments in a range of subjects, including English composition, humanities, science lab reports, and other disciplines. Guide students in developing critical writing skills, such as prewriting, revising, and editing. Foster a supportive learning environment that encourages students to build confidence in their writing. Collaborate with students to identify areas for improvement and provide constructive feedback to help them succeed academically. Stay updated on academic writing best practices and university-specific writing requirements.
Qualifications:
Strong academic background in writing, English, or related fields (current students may apply). Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds and academic disciplines. Previous tutoring or teaching experience is a plus, but not required. Patience, empathy, and a passion for helping others improve their writing.
Preferred Skills:
Experience with various types of writing, including research papers, essays, and lab reports. Familiarity with academic writing standards and formatting styles (e.g., MLA, APA). Ability to provide constructive, positive feedback in a supportive manner.
Hours:
Part-time positions with flexible hours to accommodate student schedules. Availability for in-person and/or remote tutoring sessions, depending on departmental needs.
