Job Description
Role Overview
Leads implementation and execution of a business development strategy to support growth and business development to enhance the
organisation’s presence and reputation within the general insurance industry. Manages key internal and external relationships across the
broker, intermediary and customer market to drive the organisation’s business plan targets.
Key Result Areas
Leadership and Direction
Communicate the function's strategy and its relationship to the organization's mission, vision, and values; clarify the actions needed to implement this strategy within the area of responsibility; motivate people to commit to the mission, vision, and values and do extraordinary things to achieve the organization's business goals.
Business Development
Take responsibility for implementing the business development strategy for a significant part of the organization. Formulate the strategy and identify, evaluate, and structure key transactions to ensure continued financial health and maximum value creation through the entire product life cycle. Transactions may involve alliances, collaborations, mergers and acquisitions, in- and out-licensing initiatives, and other activities.
Business Planning
Develop and propose annual business plans for a given area or department, ensuring alignment with strategy. Recommend financial and headcount budgets; propose business targets, for example, revenues or other key performance indicators (KPIs); and schedule key activities/projects, ensuring integration with other elements of the organization.
Performance Management
Manage and report on performance within the department or area of responsibility; set appropriate performance objectives for direct reports and hold individuals accountable for achieving them; take appropriate corrective action where necessary to ensure the achievement of annual business objectives.
Operational Compliance
Ensure that business activities within area of responsibility comply with relevant external regulatory and/or voluntary codes and with internal policies and procedures to minimize business risk and to protect the reputation of the organization.
Budgeting
Manage budget plans for a department. May involve development or delivery or both.

Represent the organization at major business sector events. Obtain market intelligence, influence the agenda of sector leaders, promote the organization, and enhance its reputation.
Sell Customer PropositionsReview proposed high-value customer contracts to evaluate commercial risk; identify and resolve areas of concern and authorize sign-off.
Key Account ManagementManage a portfolio of key and strategic customer relationships either personally or through a medium- to large-sized team of account managers. Develop and execute tailored solutions and strategies for customers that ensure their ongoing satisfaction and loyalty while also enhancing profitability.
Business PlanningDevelop and gain agreement to annual business plans for a function or substantial business area, ensuring alignment with strategy; quantify business outcomes, i.e., revenues or other key performance indicators (KPIs); detail expense and headcount budgets; and develop business cases for key projects, ensuring cross-functional integration.
Promoting Customer FocusLead and create an organization-wide customer orientation and develop the infrastructure for customer relationship building to place the customer at the center of the organization.
Customer Relationship Management / Account ManagementDevelop and implement a relationship management plan for strategic, complex, global existing accounts to build key relationships at local, national, and corporate levels. Coordinate the engagement of own organization with the customer organization to ensure effective two-way flow of information and resolution of issues. Manage strategic client and customer relationships, typically by deploying large account teams to ensure ongoing customer satisfaction and loyalty toward the organization.
Performance ManagementManage and report on the performance of the function/business area; set appropriate performance objectives for direct reports and hold individuals accountable for achieving them; take appropriate corrective action where necessary to ensure the achievement of annual business objectives.
Customer Relationship Development / ProspectingDevelop and implement a relationship management plan for strategic, complex, global potential accounts to build key relationships at local, national, and corporate levels. Coordinate the engagement of own organization with the customer organization to ensure effective two-way flow of information and resolution of issues.
BudgetingTake responsibility for setting and managing area budgets so they align with organizational strategy.
Organizational Capability BuildingIdentify the capabilities needed to meet the current and emerging business needs of a significant business area. Evaluate current capabilities, identify gaps, and prioritize development activities. Motivate others to develop their capabilities and fulfill their personal potential. Build capabilities elsewhere in the organization through mentoring and other informal methods.
