Position Summary/Description:
As a Stormwater Engineer, the position will assist in the operation of the University’s stormwater system, including the storm drainage system and stormwater best management practices (BMPs). This position works closely with the Stormwater Systems Engineer, who leads the stormwater engineering programs and compliance with the post-construction stormwater BMP components of the University’s NP DES MS4 Permit. This position assists in the review of new stormwater infrastructure, maintenance of existing infrastructure, and other stormwater quality programs. This position assists in developing and maintaining long and short range plans regarding the stormwater system and surface water quality. The position works with the Environment, Health and Safety Department, Facilities Planning and Construction, the Facilities Services Division, and the maintenance staff in the Grounds Department of the Facilities Services Division to provide assistance and ensure tasks are accomplished consistent with long range plans, codes, regulations and permits.
Education and Experience:
* Knowledge of hydrologic and hydraulic principles and water resources modeling programs.
* Familiar with the NC DENR Stormwater BMP Manual.
* Able to evaluate BMPs for access and maintenance issues.
* Understanding of coordinate systems and their application in GIS , including working with multiple projections.
* Knowledge of GPS , data collectors, and traditional methods to map features.
* Working knowledge of AutoCAD software and manipulating CAD drawings.
Essential Skills:
* Understanding of engineering concepts involved in the design, review, construction, and maintenance of stormwater best management practices and storm drainage systems.
* Review construction drawings, specifications, and design reports and make recommendations to approve designs based on established standards, guidelines, and/or regulations.
* Apply engineering principles to make recommendations based on field conditions.
* Working knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS software and geodatabase editing.
* Interpret design and construction documents for integration with GIS .
* Manage small projects under supervision, including setting schedules, developing sub-tasks, and identifying resource needs.
* Ability to prioritize multiple small projects.
* Write clear, concise technical reports.
* Organize data for use by other employees.
* Communicate engineering information to maintenance staff, construction supervisors, designers, administrators, and students.
