Job Summary: Responsible for safely and efficiently operating the company’s Steam & Diesel locomotives in compliance with good train handling of passenger and freight equipment. The Engineer is also responsible for the care and ability to diagnose and repair Steam & Diesel locomotives. The Engineer oversees the Fireman and can be expected to train Locomotive Engineers and Firemen. The Details: Position Type: Full-Time, Year-Round Pay: $29.55 Hourly Schedule: Typical schedule is 40 hours, 5 days/per week (may include weekends, evenings, and holidays) Life at the Grand Canyon Railway: No employee housing available. Responsibilities Responsibilities: Fully understand and support Xanterra Mission Statement and Core Values. Completes responsibilities in a manner that will ensure the safety of passengers, employees and the general public at efficient cost to the company. Oversees qualifying and maintaining locomotive Engineer part 240 and Conductor part 242 certification. Maintains flexibility to work scheduled days, evenings, weekends and holidays, with the possibility of overtime as required (with or without advance notice). Understands fully, steam boiler principles, mechanical operations of engines, electrical and brake systems. Recognizes and interpret audible, visual and olfactory conditions, signals and warnings. Ability to distinguish colors, signals, or signs from a distance and at night or in poor lighting conditions. Communicates effectively and intelligently (train announcements, reports, written items, face-to-face, telephonically and over the radio) with the general public, passengers, potential passengers, business associates, and company employees to work effectively with others. Other duties and tasks as assigned. Qualifications Qualifications: Must have a minimum of three years of railroad experience as a certified steam fireman and Diesel engineer. Must have at least 2 years of experience working with, diagnosing, and repairing Steam & Diesel locomotives. Must possess a valid and clear Arizona Driver’s License and comply with GCR Special Instructions and the Xanterra/GCR Vehicle Policy. Must be at least 19 years of age. Previous railroad experience as a Steam Locomotive Engineer is a plus. First Aid/CPR certification, is a plus. Physical Requirements include: Heavy work, lifting and pulling up to 60 pounds occasionally and up to 100 pounds on a rare basis. Stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/balance/climb on an occasional basis. Walking long distances over uneven terrain. Ability to recognize and interpret audible, visual and olfactory conditions, signals and warnings. Ability to distinguish colors, signals, or signs from a distance and at night or in poor lighting conditions. Exposure to equipment that intensifies the heat factor on an occasional basis.
