The anticipated salary range for this role is between $96,000.00 and $135,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.

Role Description

Identify and address all legal and regulatory issues affecting product offerings. Address potential risks of new products, clients and locations. Establish and enforce standards for legal review and sign-off. Ensure that contract elements are consistent with the business's understanding of the transaction, delegated authority and company policies and goals.

Role Objectives: Delivery

Assist in identifying all legal and regulatory issues affecting business unit product offerings, including consumer protection laws, discriminatory practices, usury and lending restrictions, truth in lending laws, privacy / credit reporting, contract standards and policies. Highlight potential risks of new products, clients and locations. Audit standards for legal review and sign-off, ensuring material (size, volume, risk) transactions are cleared. Help ensure that the elements of a contract (offer, acceptance, consideration, legal capacity to contract, terms, etc.) are consistent with the business's understanding of the transaction, delegated authority and company policies and goals. Help ensure that any legal, regulatory or business risks are highlighted, and are either consistent with operating authorities or appropriately mitigated. Draft contracts with vendors, partners, and customers. Monitor laws and regulations relevant to the business area and ensure all relevant parties incorporate changes in documentation, policies and procedures.

Role Objectives: Interpersonal

Develop relationships throughout the business to better understand its operations and strategy so that your legal advice is clear and contextualized. Establish relationships with industry specialists, credit review staff, finance and compliance to evaluate issues and changing requirements in their areas that may affect legal activities. Begin networking within the industry through meetings, events and involvement with trade organizations to better understand emerging trends and expand network of legal advice. Participate in initiatives with other legal units to improve contracting and risk management.

Role Objectives: Expertise

Demonstrate a working understanding of the business's operations and strategy so that your legal work is relevant. Demonstrate a fundamental knowledge of contracting, new and proposed laws, and corporate governance to assist in contract processing. Exhibit solid communication skills when conveying legal and business concepts to ensure contracts reflect the business's intent. Develop a working knowledge of finance and compliance to reduce downstream complexities to recording and executing a contract.
