Staff Writer, Home Decor, NYT Wirecutter
**The** **mission (https://www.nytco.com/company/mission-and-values/)** **of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.** **Job Description** **About the Role** Wirecutter is seeking a home decor staff writer to join our discovery team, a group of writers and editors dedicated to applying Wirecutter’s rigorous approach to service journalism to formats beyond our classic product guides. As a journalist on the discovery team, you’ll primarily write short-form stories. That includes reporting on popular products or trends, highlighting products that you really and truly love (while still being honest about their shortcomings), and interviewing public figures and subject-matter experts. You should be comfortable pitching creative, ambitious stories related to your beat on a regular basis. As a home decor writer, you should have a deep understanding of classic design and how these pieces might fit into a reader’s home—like why you’d put an Anglepoise lamp in your office but a Noguchi Akari on your bedside table. You know when it’s worth splurging on a piece of furniture and when it’s OK to save, and you can clearly explain why, in layman’s terms. You should also have a keen eye for percolating trends and emerging brands, as well as an inherent skepticism of marketing and influencer claims. You will work closely with writers and editors on Wirecutter’s home decor team, to highlight advice from their reporting and ensure our short-form journalism complements our existing and future coverage. You will also collaborate with our social and newsletter teams—fronting videos, bylining newsletters, and more. You are a tastemaker who our audiences look forward to seeing and hearing from, both on- and off-platform, and you should always be eager to help our readers sift through the noise of the internet to delight in quality, stylish product solutions that make a house a home. This role is based in New York City. **Responsibilities:** + Research, report, and write articles related to Wirecutter’s coverage areas, focusing on home decor gear, gifts, tips and trends; think creatively about sources, identify experts and diverse sources + Work quickly and efficiently to ensure accuracy and timeliness of quick-turnaround content that is rooted in Wirecutter’s deeply-reported guides + Work with our social and newsletter teams to develop off-platform content + Work with our social and community teams to respond to reader feedback and questions + Request product samples and process their return + Call experts and review academic journal articles and other scientific data; methodically scan user reviews and forums to find what truly matters to readers + Collaborate with editors to conceive new content and formats and move ideas from pitch to promotion + Collaborate with creative teams to produce visuals to support articles + Create and update content for retail events (i.e., Amazon Prime Day, Black Friday), curated Wirecutter deal events, and other seasonal projects + May be required to attend trade shows and product news events as needed to build contacts and expertise in relevant topic areas + Perform related work as assigned + Experience collaborating with a visuals or photo team on art and content packaging + Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence (https://www.nytco.com/company/mission-and-values/) and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world. + This role reports to the Deputy Editorial Director. **Basic Qualifications:** + 5+ years experience writing experience at a major publication, media company, or service journalism outlet + A passion for and experience covering home decor trends + Knowledge of SEO from an editorial perspective and understanding of how to use web analytics data to make editorial decisions **Preferred Qualifications:** + Experience doing original reporting and research for features or how-to guides is preferred; experience covering products or services, especially involving hands-on or lab testing, is also valuable This is a union position as classified by the News Guild of New York.
