Thermo Fisher Scientific's Materials & Structural Analysis Division (MSD) supplies innovative solutions for microscopy and microanalysis. We provide SEMs, TEMs, and DualBeam™ FIB-SEMs combined with advanced software suites to take customers from questions to usable data by combining high-resolution imaging with physical, elemental, chemical, and electrical analysis across scales and modes - through the broadest sample types.

The Advanced Technology Group in Hillsboro is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Focused Ion Beam (FIB) Optics Staff Scientist to join one of its dynamic research team and contribute to the design and development of the Next Generation FIB technology. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in charged particles beam optics, electron microscopy, and a passion for innovation.  

Responsibilities:

Design and simulate FIB optics components and columnsDevelop novel techniques for controlling ion beam trajectories, beam size, and beam current densityCharacterize FIB optics performance through simulations, experiments, and analysisDevelop and maintain in-house FIB modeling software toolsCollaborate with multi-functional engineering teams to integrate optics components into FIB systemsMaintain extensive knowledge of principles and theories of FIBs, ion sources and related-systemsActively participate in developing FIB technology-related patent applicationsLead small-sized FIB development projectsDevelop research proposals, contribute to improving the FIB technology roadmapPrepare reports and presentations to communicate findingsProvide technical expertise and support to internal and external partners

Qualifications:

M.S. Degree with minimum of 10 years experience or Ph.D. in Physics with minimum of 2 years in a related field with a focus on charged particle optics.Experience in ion beam optics design, simulation, and characterizationProficiency in CAD software and simulation tools for ion optics designExperience with Python programming languageHands-on experience with operating Dual Beam systemsExcellent analytical and problem-solving skillsExperience using laboratory equipment, including electronics, high voltage and vacuum systemsExcellent data processing and analytical skillsStrong communication and collaboration abilitiesAbility to lead small-sized projectsAbility to work independently and in a team environment
