Staff EHS Engineer

We are seeking a Staff EHS Engineer to join our team in Bloomfield, Connecticut where CO2 and Fiber Lasers are developed and produced. The Ideal candidate will have a strong background in Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) in a manufacturing setting. This position will be responsible for designing, implementing, documenting, and maintaining our EHS and laser programs.  This role will support the safety programs at our manufacturing facility in Bloomfield, Connecticut.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

EHS Training

Lead efforts for planning site EHS training for employees, contractors, and other visitors Implement & manage the company’s  learning management system (LMS) and training matrices Maintenance of PowerPoints, and other training materials   Ensure EHS training is completed, including written feedback by participants EHS training records maintained for easy access Lead Emergency Medical Response Team and coordinate training at the site for CPR, AED, First Aid

Environmental Activities

Ensure timely submission and renewal of all required environmental permit applications and  Complete environmental calculations as needed. Lead environmental inspections and audits Ensure all local, state and federal environmental reporting requirements are met Coordinate and conduct any required environmental sampling Prepare and submit environmental reports including, but not limited to, Tier II, TRI, emissions reporting and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) data and safety scorecards

EHS Committee Activities

Lead/support site EHS Safety Committee Conduct JSA’s, incident investigations and root-cause analysis. Drive completion of the safety observations and corrective actions

Other EHS Activities

Manage SDS program including program for approving new chemicals to site Lead Medical Surveillance efforts for the site, as required Lead Industrial Health program and related efforts for the site Participate in execution of the Respirator Fit-Testing Program for the site if required Manage the Prescription Safety Glasses program for the site Conduct JSAs, EHSRs, Incident Investigations/RCAs as directed by the Regional EHS Manager, Auditor, or as required by tasks, programs and projects within the site Follow-up and manage on employee EHS Concerns and Near Miss events received verbally or through the sites notification system Lead the review and updating of site EHS programs, guidelines and procedures to ensure they are compliant with both Corporate, State, local and Federal guidelines Attend meetings or functions as the subject matter expert on EHS and Facilities, as necessary Keep up to date with all EHS regulations and techniques Escort and assist regulatory inspectors as necessary Coordinate waste programs, including hazardous, non-hazardous, Universal waste and recycling programs Serve as Laser Safety Officer and oversee Laser Safety Program Ensure monthly audits are completed for general and laser safety Perform other projects as assigned 

Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in environmental safety, Occupational Safety and Health, or related field desired; equivalent experience considered 3+ years EHS experience required – (2 years laser safety experience is a plus) Semiconductor or laser related industry experience in engineering, manufacturing, or manufacturing engineering preferred  Knowledge of cleanroom environments, tool installation and hookups Knowledge of regulations under OSHA, DOT, RCRA and LEAN principles  Certified trainer in EHS topics, including but not limited to First Aid/CPR, Forklift Operations Certification, Emergency Response, Fire Safety, is a plus

Skills

Participate in required safety training (RCRA, DOT Hazmat Shipper, etc.) and mandatory member of the Emergency Response Team (ERT). Respond to emergencies as part of the ERT CPR certified or willing to become certified.   Open to furthering safety knowledge through seminars, training, etc.  Ability to conduct inspections using inspection equipment Training in laser safety is a plus Proficient with Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.) Accurate data entry skills required Strong written and verbal communications skills Must be open to flexible work hours Ability to work independently and efficiently with little supervision Must be able to concentrate in a busy work environment and be detail oriented to maintain a high level of quality and maintain a safe work environment Good problem-solving and analytical skills  Proven ability to manage multiple projects and contractors simultaneously

Working Conditions

The work environment will range from office to plant floor and include periodic work performed outside  Work may be performed on ground level and/or at heights using ladders or lifts This position must generally work on-site Must be comfortable working with chemicals and machines Must be willing to receive calls or work at night or weekends occasionally Must be willing to travel domestically up to 10%, mainly to support audits and support sites within CT Must have the ability to work with employees and customers in a multi-cultural, global team environment

Physical Requirements

Must be able to effectively move around the facility. May be asked to stand for extended periods of time (up to 4 hours) May be required to occasionally perform strenuous work Ability to reach, bend, push, pull and lift 50 pounds  Must be able to work sitting at least 6 hours per shift

Safety Requirements

All employees are required to follow the site EHS procedures and Coherent Corp. Corporate EHS standards.
