Staff Controls Engineer
About Rivian Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract. As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations. Role Summary As a Staff Control Engineer at Rivian, you will play a key role in the design, development, validation, and deployment of innovative system-level control algorithms for lightweight electric propulsion systems. You will be responsible for testing and troubleshooting control algorithms both in simulation and on hardware targets, ensuring that they perform efficiently in real-world applications. Your contributions will span across various stages of the development process, including requirements engineering, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), and software-in-the-loop (SIL) testing. You will define system regression test cases and establish pass/fail criteria, working closely with a collaborative team of system, electrical, and software engineers to integrate and validate the control systems. This role offers a unique opportunity to apply first principles thinking to solve complex control problems and to work on cutting-edge propulsion technologies. You will have the chance to develop robust, real-time solutions, and make significant contributions to Rivian’s mission of creating innovative, efficient, and sustainable transportation systems. Responsibilities Model, design, develop, validate, and deploy innovative system-level control system algorithms for lightweight propulsion systems Test, validate, and troubleshoot implemented control algorithms in simulation and on hardware targets. Contribute to requirements engineering, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), and software-in-the-loop (SIL) workstreams. Define system regression test cases and establish pass/fail criteria. Collaborate closely in a team environment with system, electrical, and software engineers. Qualifications MSc or PhD in Controls or Electrical Engineering with a specialization in controls (MSc + 5 years or PhD + 3 years, including at least 3 years of relevant professional experience). Strong knowledge of vehicle dynamics, electric powertrains, and fundamental control theory. Ability to apply first principles thinking to understand new systems and solve complex problems. Expertise in developing custom real-time solutions using MATLAB/Simulink/Stateflow. Proficiency with relevant engineering tools, such as Vector CANape (or similar calibration interfaces), ECU diagnostic tools, Git, etc. Demonstrated experience navigating ambiguity to develop robust algorithms from scratch, including software architecture, implementation, integration, and testing. Strong engineering fundamentals in dynamical systems, control theory, and high-frequency/high-bandwidth applications, with experience in advanced techniques like model predictive control. Comprehensive understanding of rotating machine dynamics, including friction, backlash, NVH, and corresponding control strategies. Strong knowledge of various input sensors, low-level/high-speed signal formats, and communication protocols such as CAN and EtherCAT. Familiarity with BLDC motor controls is a bonus. Knowledge of version control systems (e.g., Git) and continuous integration processes. Familiarity with developing code compatible with resource-constrained microcontrollers, as well as rapid prototyping platforms.
