Sr. Director Assays and North America R&D

The Senior Director of Assays and North America R&D is a key R&D leadership role, responsible for delivering sustainable menu growth and platform development across Abcam’s antibody and assay portfolios. Responsible for maintaining and reporting on a robust assays and antibody pairs development pipeline, and driving innovation and sustaining activities across assay and antibody development platforms, this role is key to supporting Abcam’s growth targets in the short and longer team. We are looking for a leader with a track record of sustained delivery of technical and commercial objectives, a demonstrable history of designing and implementing continuous improvements, and proven success at designing, developing and engaging large, multi-disciplinary R&D organizations across multiple locations. This position reports to the SVP, Research and Development and will be based on-site in Waltham, MA. In this role, you will have the opportunity to: + Execute on a comprehensive Assay solutions strategy that drives innovation, enhances product quality, and expands Abcam’s market leadership in this category. Establish and refine strategies that maximize innovation and market share while ensuring competitiveness in the global market. Monitor and analyse key performance metrics, making data-driven decisions to optimize entire R&D Assay portfolio. + Engage with customers, thought leaders, and industry experts to gain deep insights into market needs and preferences. Identify opportunities for growth, innovation and refinement, ensuring the assay portfolio meets the evolving needs of researchers in the academic and biopharma fields. + Lead new development of antibodies, antibody pairs, proteins, immunoassays, cell-based assays and biochemical assays, leading and managing new product development teams across two North America sites, working with commercial partners to deliver new products to agreed specifications. + Provide scientific and technical leadership to drive the development of Abcam’s antibody and assay platforms, driving projects and opportunities to optimize our processes in speed, output and quality, designing and implementing industry-leading approaches. + Actively build a collaborative environment and working relationships within the R&D Senior Leadership team and across other key stakeholder functions, interacting with and influencing senior stakeholders across finance, program management, product management, sales, digital, manufacturing and logistics to deliver to our objectives and strategic goals. + Lead all R&D functions and associates across our Waltham, MA and Eugene, OR sites, managing a diverse team of direct reports from Lab Technician to Director level, including ownership of skills suitability, productivity, training, development, performance review, and operational updates. + Serve as internal and external subject matter expert in antibody and assay development technologies; proposing new innovative opportunities and creating new and valuable intellectual property for Abcam. The essential requirements of the job include: + PhD qualification in a life science discipline with broad practical knowledge of the life science tools and reagents space, with particular focus on antibody and/or immunoassay technologies and platforms + 15+ years of experience developing and validating antibodies, immunoassays, and/or ligand-binding assays with 10+ years spent effectively managing multiple people and projects; recognized leader in scientific specialty as evidenced by publications, patents, participation in international conferences, membership on journal editorial boards, etc. + Experience of leading and/or positively influencing global teams to exceed objectives, working with senior leaders to set goals and standards to effect delivery against strategy + Deep understanding of key business drivers across Research, Development and Commercial functions in a company producing and marketing reagent/diagnostic products to life scientists in academia and industry. + Demonstrated ability to design R&D organizations, establish and value a thriving team culture, establish and maintain effective and agile R&D operating models, and influence effectively within a wide constituency of cross-functional stakeholders + Passion for team engagement and development with a track record of effectively delegating responsibilities, empowering team members and supporting professional development and career growth across the organization + Ability to distil complex business, operational and scientific problems to end-to-end solutions, enabling and enhancing cross-functional communications and understanding with both scientific and non-scientific stakeholders Travel, Motor Vehicle Record & Physical/Environment Requirements: + Ability to travel 30% of time, nationally and internationally as required It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in: + Capacity planning / resource allocation/ project timeline management + Experience managing large R&D budgets, reporting performance, actively managing employee performance and development The salary range OR the hourly range for this role is $170,000 - $190,000. This is the range that we in good faith believe is the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future. This job is also eligible for bonus/incentive pay.
