About the role

This position is responsible for leading all Design Engineering activities of Mechanical and Process Engineering teams. The scope covers design and operations support for all aspects of TTFs (Thermo-mechanical Treatment Facilities) at 35+ facilities globally. This includes combustion systems, cranes, steam generation boilers (incl. auxiliaries), feedwater pumps, deaerator systems, turbine generators, condensers, air pollution control equipment, ash handling and conveying equipment, metals recovery systems. Although this is a corporate engineering role, it involves extensive collaboration with sites, hence ~30% travel is required.

Reporting to VP of Design Engineering, this position is also involved in goal settings, budgeting, resource planning, and project prioritization. This role also communicates closely with the leadership of the Plant Support Engineering, Design Engineering Disciplines (I&C, Electrical, Project Engineering) and Regional Engineering teams to ensure all discipline needs are met. This role is called upon to support and resource business development and lead Engineering efforts for Environmental Compliance initiatives.

Key responsibilities, deliverables and expectations:

Technical/Design Engineering:

Discipline Engineering: Manage and prioritize the workload of the Mechanical and Process engineering team/SMEs.Technical Programs: Lead technical programs of strategic importance to Company's businesses.Technical Standards/Specs: Develop and maintain mechanical standards and technical specifications.Operations Support: Generates strategic new technological offerings that are key to business plans. Leverage outside engineering firms: to implement technological upgrades with Business feasible solutions.Front End Loading/FEL: Lead Front End Design for Mechanical capital projects. Coach and Train SMEs to navigate the FEL suite of tools on their use.Feasibility Studies: Leading feasibility studies for new or retrofit designs, considering total cost of ownership (Capital, O&M Cost) and propose solutions considering both, technical and economic factors.

Continuous Improvement and EHS:

RCA/Problem Solving: Provide SME support for RCAs to solve problems and implement solutions.Lessons Learned: Drive Lessons Learned initiative from Technical issues at sites and update Tech Standards/specs for future design improvements.Lead Productivity and Unscheduled Downtime Improvement Projects to support ops. savings at facilities.Lead Technical Risk Assessment for Mechanical Designs (HAZOPs, HAZIDs etc.)Lead FMEA Process for critical troubleshooting at sites.Lead Health and Safety improvements by Designing out the root causes highlighted by H&S RCAs.  

Leadership:

Talent Management: Attracts and develops key talent including Performance Management of Internal Teams.Professional Development: Provide guidance on the professional development of the mechanical SMEs.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

Bachelor of Science (Mechanical Engineering).

Experience:

Min 15 years of experience in a Mechanical Engineering role, including people leadership responsibilities.Must have prior experience working in and around power generating plants or large industrial facilities and systems including boilers and combustion, steam generation and distribution, turbine generators, and balance of plant (steam condensers, feedwater pumps and systems, cooling towers and circulating cooling water systems, etc.).Additional experience in power plants and cogeneration is also desirable.Prior experience managing technical personnel, either in a direct report or team responsibility setting, is required.Experience working through all phases of the project execution process, from basic conceptual design through FEL, construction, commissioning and start-up is desirable.Experience working in facility operations and/or maintenance support is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Proven problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze data to identify trends is required.Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills - with experience communicating across all levels of the organization - are required.Must be able to manage multiple concurrent projects with minimal direction, while at the same time providing guidance to a technical team of direct reports.

Certifications (if applicable):

Professional Engineering (PE) license in the US is Preferred but not requiredSix Sigma certification (Green Belt minimum) is highly desired
