Roche Diagnostics acquired LumiraDx in 2024 for its unique Point of Care diagnostics platform. You will be an instrumental member of the R&D team to develop the molecular assays and next generation POC diagnostic platform. We look to innovative diagnostics which can shape the future of healthcare and change lives.

Roche is seeking a motivated Systems Engineer to join the Assay Integration and Engineering group in San Diego. This individual will be responsible for working on all aspects (including Microfluidic Chip Design, Instrument API Scripting, and Data Processing ) of LumiraDx’s microfluidic strip and diagnostic platform technology. This role requires expert scientific knowledge as well as technical expertise in design and execution of experiments in the areas of mechanical, fluidic, and thermal engineering, along with assay development and systems integration. This role requires up to 60% of bench-level work. An ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate technical skills, and also aspire to grow as an independent engineer who can take more leadership opportunities in the future.

You will lead design, development, and testing of microfluidic strip designs to achieve project goals and timeline

You will execute experiments efficiently with high reproducibility, in collaboration with R&D team

You will achieve project objectives by troubleshooting experiments and testing practical and creative solutions

You will write and review technical documents including protocols, reports, methods, specifications, SOPs, and technical assessments

You will present effectively, providing progress updates and feedback on a regular basis

You will conduct data processing, create visualizations, design experiments (DOE), and perform statistical analysis (such as ANOVA) using tools like JMP, Excel, and others as needed

You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including assay scientists, hardware engineers, and quality specialists to ensure seamless integration work.

You may manage processes for projects, requiring delegation of work and review of others' work product
 

This is an onsite position based in Solana Beach, CA. (This is not a hybrid role.)

Who You Are:
(Required)

You have a B.S., in Engineering (Bioengineering, Mechanical, etc.) or related field with 6+ years of experience; or a M.S with 4+ years of experience; or a PhD with 2+ years of experience in a pharma/biotech environment 

You have 2+ years of experience in microfluidic system technology. 

You have demonstrated experience in root cause analysis and an attention to detail when approaching problem-solving.
 

Preferred:

You have experience using computer aided design software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc.)

You have experience of using statistical tools (JMP, Excel, Minitab, etc…).

You have experience with Molecular Diagnostic assays (PCR, qPCR, ddPCR, and/or other isothermal/non-isothermal amplification techniques).

You have experience with programming languages (Python, Matlab, C#, etc)

You have experience developing and validating FDA cleared and CE Marked IVD products.

You have experience leading and/or managing projects.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT
 

The essential functions of the job are usually performed in an environmentally controlled facility where the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  This position may involve a combination of office and biotechnology laboratory environments.   The employee may be exposed to hazardous chemicals, biological pathogens and automated equipment. While performing the job duties, the employee is regularly required to sit; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear.  The employee is frequently required to stand and walk.  The employee may sometimes be required to lift and/or move up to 35 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Solana Beach, CA is $72,500 - $135,500.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.  A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.
