Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations._ **Responsibilities:** GENERAL PURPOSE: Provides direct research support and is responsible for small and large, complex research projects that constitute major aspects of several larger research projects. Responsible for operation of a specialized research area or laboratory with one or more faculty members within a department. May train technicians, undergraduate students, temporary lab personnel, pre-doctoral students and post-doctoral and medical fellows who join or work with the core laboratory in lab specific techniques. Provides guidance or directly supervises technicians and undergraduate students. May act as liaison with other departments, divisions or organizations **ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS** **Lab Management and Operations** + Collaborates with investigators in writing protocols for the conduct of research, including purposes of study, design of experiments, lists of materials, methods to be used, and the schedule of activities. + Ensuring software, licenses, electronic lab notebooks, protocols, and SOPs are up to date. + Maintaining lab equipment, including liquid nitrogen storage. + Upholding safety protocols, chemical inventory, and ensuring lab compliance. + Scheduling and organizing lab meetings and training, including compliance and safety training for lab members. + Developing and installing operating procedures for the lab and coordinating service support. + Recommending and authorizing expenditures for lab equipment and supplies. **Experimental Design and Implementation** + Sets up and performs experiments and procedures in support of lab goals and grant commitments. Includes planning and conducting moderately complex experiments, including flow cytometry, molecular engineering, tissue culture, microscopy, and FACS staining/acquisition. + Performing morphometric analysis of histology slides with tools like Visiopharm. + Modifying or adapting standard procedures to meet the needs of specific research projects and developing unique assays. **Sample and Data Management** + Organizing and overseeing the preparation, storage, and management of biospecimens (blood, tissue, bone marrow, histology specimens). + Managing specimen inventory, moving samples to long-term storage, and interfacing with databases (e.g., BLIS). + Entering sample and subject data into databases, troubleshooting and retrieving data. **Supervision and Training** + Oversees day-to-day operation of project or laboratory and may supervise research and support personnel. + Teaches laboratory techniques and instrumentation procedures to students and professional laboratory support staff. + Counsels on technical problems, advises and assists with study techniques. **Research Reporting and Publication Support** + Preparing written reports and presentations on on-going projects in the lab and contributes to research publications. + Assisting with the final writing of research papers and project reports. **Safety and Compliance** + Ensuring lab safety, especially in handling biosafety and human subject sampling. + Maintaining and updating health and safety practices in compliance with University policies and regulations. **Professional Development, Collaboration and Coordination** + Maintains contact with internal and external research laboratories, vendors, and technical representatives. + Orients visitors to the laboratory + Keeping abreast of trends and literature in the field, by reading professional journals and attending/participating in weekly lab meetings, and, as appropriate, seminars. **QUALIFICATIONS** + Bachelor's degree required. + Master's degree preferred. + 5 years of related work experience involving direct assistance to researchers required. + Ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment as needed required. **EOE Minorities / Females / Protected Veterans / Disabled:** The University of Rochester is committed to fostering, cultivating, and preserving a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion to advance the University’s mission to Learn, Discover, Heal, Create – and Make the World Ever Better.
