The External Communications Senior Manager role is highly visible and responsible for leading the external communications function for Meijer. This role is critical to the company’s success as it helps the business connect with external stakeholders in ways that drive sales, increase brand loyalty, and support the company’s strategic priorities. The position reports to the Vice President, Communications & Community Engagement and is part of the company’s Communications & Community Engagement department.

What You'll be Doing: 

Develop and manage external communications strategies that help the company achieve key priorities and objectives across its full six-state footprint 

Ensure our external communications strategies, communications, and content meet the company’s quality standards 

Lead our reputation measurement and optimization program, including reputation measurement with a third-party 

Provide communications counsel to the Vice President, Communications & Community Engagement and the Senior Leadership team 

Lead the company’s external communications channel strategy 

Serve as a primary media spokesperson for the company and help train others to serve as spokespeople for specific situations 

Regularly bring forward recommendations to improve the External Communications function 

Play a lead role in issues and crisis management, helping to manage sensitive issues across the business 

Lead a culture where data and measurement informs and guides work 

Ensure direct reports (2) and agency partners are providing thoughtful counsel and producing high-quality work 

Help direct reports grow and develop their skills 

Play a leadership role in external events including grand openings, press conferences, speaking engagements, and communications for the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give

What You Bring with You (Qualifications): 

Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related fields. 

Minimum 12 years communications experience in a corporate or agency setting 

Strong business acumen with demonstrated ability to identify news opportunities, link strategies to external communication campaigns, deliver results and adjust plans as appropriate

Exceptional intrapersonal skills and the ability to provide counsel to team members at all levels, including senior leadership 

Proven ability to build trust and respect among internal partners 

Strong storytelling skills 

Clear understanding of how to engage external stakeholders in both traditional and modern ways 

Experience building relationships with, and managing print, broadcast, and online editorial news media 

Experience with crisis and issues management   

Extremely strong writing capabilities 

Strong, collaboration and organizational skills  

Enthusiasm and a calm demeanor suited for working in a fast-paced environment
