Responsibilities

The Employee and Labor Relations Specialist is responsible for maintaining good labor relations work practices in the assigned, designated areas for the purpose of protecting the company from any labor and employment-related liability. Provides regular business insights and reporting based on Employee and Labor Relations trends and predictive measures for creating a strong work environment and increasing retention.

 

Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs):

• Facilitate negotiation, administration, and compliance with CBAs between the company and labor unions.


Management Support:

• Provide direction, developmental support, guidance, and feedback to managers and management teams on labor and employee relations.


Training and Communication:

• Communicate, train, and develop management at various levels on best practices for labor and employee relations, changes to State and Federal laws, terms of CBAs, and company policies and procedures.
• Collaborate with the Training department to update annual training materials and distribute new mandates to new hires and existing staff.


Grievance and Arbitration:

• Manage the grievance and arbitration process including intake, witness preparation, conducting hearings (as assigned), document collection, and providing management with notifications regarding outcomes and operational impact.


Issue Resolution:

• Ensure all labor and employee-related issues are addressed in a timely, fair, consistent, and confidential manner to meet legal requirements and company standards.
• Act proactively to prevent widespread employee relations concerns or labor relations problems in partnership with department leadership.


Notification and Compliance:
• Ensure proper notice of changes to employment terms and other contractually required events are provided to labor union representatives in accordance with CBAs and relevant laws.


Union Coordination:
• Coordinate union representative visits to local facilities, Weingarten requests, and meetings on premises.
• Act as a liaison with NYBC and union representatives (Local 1199 and Local 202) regarding suspensions, terminations, grievances, and arbitration scheduling, ensuring compliance with CBA regulations.


Termination Recommendations:
• Review all termination recommendations with the Vice President of HR or designee.


Legal and Compliance Collaboration:
• Work with the law department and outside counsel on employment-related matters.
• Assist with EEO investigations and prepare/review company responses to administrative agency charges.


Process Improvement:
• Regularly engage in process improvement projects related to Human Resources, Employee Relations, Labor Relations, and other key business functions.


Training Programs:
• Assist in designing and implementing training programs focused on employee and labor relations issues.


Unemployment Inquiries:
• Research and coordinate responses to unemployment inquiries and cases, preparing necessary documentation and evidence. Work closely with third-party UI vendors and reconcile UI billing and statements.


Collective Bargaining:
• Collaborate in collective bargaining sessions including note-taking, drafting proposals, and agreements.

• Work as an individual or on a team for assigned special projects.
• Attend professional development programs as required.
• Any related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's Degree in HR, Business, Management, Labor Relations, Law, or closely related field. (Master’s Degree preferred)

Experience:

Minimum 3 years' experience in a Labor relations or union environmentExperience dealing with employee relations matters including coaching and counseling staff.In-depth knowledge and understanding of Federal and Local labor laws, policies, and Human Resources best practices.Experience with collective bargaining, grievance management, and labor relations.Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure.

Licenses/Certifications:

Certification in HR or Labor Relations (e.g., SHRM-SCP, PHR, or similar) is a plus.

Any combination of education, training and experience equivalent to the requirements listed above that has supplied the necessary knowledge, skills and experience to perform the essential functions of the job.

 

For applicants who will perform this position in New York City or Westchester County, the proposed annual salary is $80,000.00p/yr. to $90,000.00p/yr. For applicants who will perform this position outside of New York City or Westchester County, salary will reflect local market rates and be commensurate with the applicant’s skills, job-related knowledge, and experience.
