Spain Political & Economics Correspondent - Reuters

We anticipate the successful candidate being based in Madrid, Spain.

Reuters is seeking an experienced and self-starting reporter with deep knowledge of Spanish politics, economics and current affairs to lead reporting of major news as well as chasing down, conceptualising, reporting out and writing ambitious and colourful enterprise stories, joining the dots about what's happening in Spain, its influence within the bloc and elsewhere in the world.

As Spain Political & Economics Correspondent, you'll chart Spain's negotiations with Europe on Chinese EV tariffs as it seeks to protect its important pork industry and lock in Chinese investment in its industries, and its ambitious geopolitical approach to topics like the Middle East, regional defence and North and West African migration management. You will also test whether Spain can maintain its rapid post-COVID economic growth on the back of booming tourism, migration, bolstered employment and EU funds, even as Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez balances fragmented support on the left and right to pass a budget and maintain his minority government.

About the Role

As Spain Political and Economics Correspondent, you will:

Break news and write agenda-setting stories

Work as part of a team both with colleagues in the bureau as well as the wider European politics and economics reporting team

Write clear, readable stories that identify trends and interpret Spanish affairs for a wider audience

Build and maintain a wide network of sources in Spanish political and business circles.

Use graphics, data and other innovative story-telling techniques to push our reporting further and attract new audiences

About You

You're a fit for the role of Spain Political and Economics Correspondent if you have:

A track record of building sources and delivering scoops

Experience covering European political and economic affairs

Experience as an effective team player, with strong communication skills

Fluent in Spanish and English with strong writing ability in the latter

A can-do attitude and boundless energy
