The Role

QuidelOrtho is looking for a Software Engineer Intern that wants to spend their 2025 summer working towards our mission: Changing Lives, One Test at a Time. Interns will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and develop their skills all while contributing to key company projects and initiatives. Our team will help students apply their educational background and broaden their knowledge base within their role and learn more about working in the medical device/biotech industry. Interns will work with a mentor(s) on a guided and impactful project and will be able to collaborate with and be part of a supportive and dedicated team.

As a Software Engineering Intern at QuidelOrtho, you will collaborate with cross functional teams of engineers and gain hands-on experience designing and developing software to support the development of Vitros instruments.  For this position we are looking for an intern to assist with enhancements to our test automation system by extending its functionality, creating and running tests of the system, and working with other engineers who use the test automation system. The testing automation system uses Python scripts with some functions coded in C/C++. The system executes on an x86-based computing system running a Unix-like operating system (QNX Neutrino). 

You’ll gain experience with medical device software development, debugging, source code control systems, test frameworks, continuous integration, static analysis, Agile work management systems (JIRA), and other facets of creating reliable software. 

This Internship is a full-time (40 hours per week) paid program for 12-weeks. Start dates are June 2nd or June 16th, 2025

Office Location: Rochester, NY - Students must be in the area for duration of the program. QuidelOrtho is unable to provide housing accommodations.

The Responsibilities

Design and coding of new functionality for the test automation system, including creation of new APIs and methods in C/C++ programs and Python scriptsCreating, revising, and execute Python scripts which execute tests to test your changesParticipate and help define the roadmap of the test automation platformCreate and deliver new or updated C/C++ libraries and utilities in QNX.Create and deliver Python utilities to add functionality to the test automation system.Perform other work-related duties as assigned

The Individual

Required:

Must be at least 18 years oldMust be currently enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in the Fall Semester 2025 at an accredited university or college.Field of study: Computer Science, Software Engineering or related field Minimum GPA 3.0 or higherAble to start on either June 2nd or June 16thAbility to complete a consecutive 10-12 week internshipStrong knowledge of programming fundamentals and SDLCAbility to write clean, maintainable code in Python and C/C++Good communication and documentation skills, including generation of design considerations and tradeoffsAbility to easily read, follow, and modify code with a drive to creating good implementations. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail.Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and engage with various stakeholders.Must have work authorization in the United States at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment

Preferred:

Rising Junior or Senior at an accredited university or collegeExperience running virtual machines using VirtualBox and VMWare Familiarity with a software version control system such as Subversion or GitKnowledge of Continuous Integration methods and tools (Jenkins) helpful Experience with software development on Unix-like operating systems such as Linux and QNX using tools like gcc and make/cmakeAbility to use an IDE such as VS Code or Eclipse CDT for coding and debugging. Familiarity with a xUnit test framework such as Pytest and gtest

The Work Environment

No strenuous physical activity, though occasional light lifting of files and related materials is required. 30% of time in meetings, working with team, or talking on the phone, 70% of the time at the desk on computer, doing analytical work.

Salary Transparency

The salary range for this position takes into account a wide range of factors including education, experience, knowledge, skills, geography, and abilities of the candidate, in addition to internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary range for current Freshman, rising Sophomore is 18.00/hour; Sophomore, rising Junior is 20/hour; Junior, rising senior is $23.00/hour to $26.00/hour; Senior, enrolled in school for fall 2024 is 25.00/hour to 28.00/hour; or currently enrolled Graduate, MBD, PhD program is 28.00/hour to 30.00/hour. At QuidelOrtho, compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
