The main purpose of this position/job is:

To develop and implement support programmes for students who struggle with basic needs insecurities and experience distress on campus.
To support students presenting with psycho-social/emotional difficulties, through crisis intervention/containment/counselling/debriefing, mentoring and
group interventions.
To support the development of students as active citizens by promoting participation in meaningful and productive community service and discussions
and dialogue.
To promote student social responsibility.

WCCO s aim is to enrich learning by promoting civic responsibility among students. WCCO advocates active citizenship by providing opportunities and experiences that offer hands-on, experiential education and various platforms that is developmental and transformative. WCCO also provides student support through the implementation of a student basic needs programme which involves a campus wide food programme and a transitional accommodation programme. The unit provides a high standard of services based on an ethos of student-centeredness, inclusivity, and human rights.

WCCO facilitates and provides:

Students with opportunities to help develop their personal and professional skills, whilst building their sense of community and forming friendships.
A variety of volunteering activities suited to students, these include leading micro-volunteering projects, in addition to working in conjunction with
external NGO s or communities with once off or ongoing projects as student volunteers.
Support and placements of students in need of transitional accommodation.
Support for students in need of food.
Student Leadership Development Programmes through volunteering including:
o The one-week Civic Leadership Programme.
o Rural volunteer camps.
o Climate Justice education programme.
Once off community engagement events.Brief Description Key responsibilities include the following:

Promote student community engagement.
Assist students who experience basic needs insecurities.
Provide students with opportunities for leadership development.


Required Academic Qualification/s, competences, and experience:

Honours Degree (Social Work or equivalent degree essential).
Registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP).
3 5 years experience in counselling (short term individual and group).
Excellent professional skills and experience to co-ordinate, organize and implement life skills workshops, programmes, and presentations.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Ability to liaise effectively and professionally, with a wide range of people e.g. colleagues, managers, scholars, students, faculty staff, internally and
outside the university. Occasional after-hours workshops/presentations on campus and in Residences
Computer literacy.
Report writing, editing and research skills.


Preferences:

Experience in working in the above areas at a Higher Educational Institution would be an advantage.

The candidate should have good interpersonal skills, passionate about helping students, passionate about community development, computer literacy, knowledge of community needs, knowledge of community resources, ability to organize events, be inclusive, and understand diversity.
