Summary of Job Description

The Shop Floor Designer is responsible for being a day-to-day liaison between the manufacturing floor personnel and Engineering. The position is responsible for designing new, modified, or improved vehicle components and subsystems to support the specialty vehicle markets and will possess relevant experience with heavy truck, agriculture, automotive, or heavy construction product design. This position is also responsible for performing floor engineering which consists of the layout of special parts needed on the job.

This role is considered an hourly manufacturing role, sits within the manufacturing area and primarily supports manufacturing design needs.

Essential Functions

Create designs for projects that are currently on the assembly line and are not structurally significant. Ie. Close out panels, cabinets, minor brackets, shelves.

Monitor all designs for potential cost reductions and make recommendations to design engineering as required to structure parts to Bill of Materials

Take shop measurements and order parts on a timely basis

Become familiar with assembly processes, fabrication techniques and equipment in order to advise design engineering when a design conflicts with accepted processes

Investigate quality problems and work with appropriate department in solving these problems

Monitor repetitive DOL orders and develop these parts into stock items

Responsible for checking the accuracy of his/her work

Be completely familiar with drafting standards, symbols, nomenclature, engineering terms, and proper use of materials, reference books

Responsible for coordinating the design and layout of special options

Review job requirements directly with engineering, contract administrators, sales and manufacturing

Gather information and data for jobs

Make routine calculations using standard engineering formulas

Maintain a safe and clean work environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations

Regular attendance required

All other duties and responsibilities that are assigned

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent education

One year of solid modeling experience

Preferred Qualifications to complete Essential Functions

Associate Degree in Mechanical Design or related field

Experience with SolidWorks and AutoCAD software

Knowledge of fabrication and weld processes

Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication skills

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Detail-oriented

Work Environment

Working conditions will be inside and outside where temperatures will vary from extreme heat to extreme cold for extended periods of time. This position is regularly exposed to vibration and loud noises.
