TITLE: Service & Repair Mechanic (Electronics) - NY HELPS
LOCATION: Networking and Telecom/Milne Library

Duties include but are not limited to:
1. Take a cooperative lead role in the installation and maintenance of Card Access infrastructure and hardware across campus in collaboration with the Telecommunications Service Manager.
a. Act as co-lead technician and installer for all requested installations and troubleshooting scenarios with the department's Grade 12 Trades Generalists.
b. Delegate tasks assigned by the Telecommunications Service Manager to Grade 9 and 6 positions, as instructed, regarding the Card Access Network.
c. Work cooperatively with the campus Card Access Administrator to install and service Card Access system components in a timely manner.
d. Provide input on scheduled installations and service regarding best practices and estimated work effort.
e. Assist the Telecommunications Service Manager in design oversight for capital and campus projects regarding Card Access.
f. Become self-sufficient in basic functions of Millenium software for Access Control required for installation and troubleshooting cabling and hardware.
2. Assist the Telecommunications Service Manager in daily PBX, data network, CATV, CCTV, and Card Access operations such as moves, adds, and changes (MAC's).
a. Use appropriate means and methods for making copper and fiber connections following current industry standards.
b. Troubleshoot cabling and hardware associated with the various network and systems outlined above.
c. Assist in scheduling of maintenance duties for Card Access across internal and external departments across campus.
d. Collaborate with internal and external departments efficiently and effectively to resolve issues related to Card Access.
3. Respond at the behest of the Telecommunications Service Manager, to emergencies related the various networks and systems, regardless of day and time. This assumes you are reachable and available.
4. Assist Network Operations to install and replace network switches and Wireless Access points.
a. Maintain knowledge of how many switch ports are available and in what locations.
b. When switch ports are low, communicate with the Telecommunications Service Manager so appropriate actions can be taken.
5. Assist with utility mark outs and attend dig meetings for campus and capital projects.
6. Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of all state-owned areas, tools, supplies, and vehicles.
a. Keep all tools and testers maintained, identified, and staged in an accessible location for easy access in emergency situations or when you are absent.
b. Keep the office area tidy.
c. At least once a week, organize paperwork, store materials and clean desk and floor area.
d. Maintain cleanliness and organization of fleet vehicles.
7. Attend training, certification, or other professional development events as approved, and maintain credentials.
a. Siemon CI, Utility locator training, Optical Fiber training, Card Access networks, etc.
b. Provide necessary quotes and PR's necessary for recertification.
8. Maintain ticket assignments in Team Dynamix.
a. Resolve all incidents once work is complete and communicate with customers if required.
b. Keep all Task/ Incident work notes and ticket status current; close and/ or resolve when work is complete.
9. Assist in inventory control for all networks and systems administered by Networking and Telecommunications.
a. Maintain inventory parts list every three months for consumables stock.
b. Retain consumable stock in Milne swing space or project area.
c. Delegate techs or appointed students to restock, keep inventory sheet up-to-date, and advise on what needs to be replenished in cooperation with the departments Grade 12 Trades Generalist.
d. Acquire quotes for supplies and confirm with service manager to complete purchase order.
10. Document information that needs to be retained to keep adequate records and database information for all networks and systems administered by Networking and Telecommunications.
a. Take primary leadership in Assisting the Telecommunications Service Manager in documenting all defined aspects of the Card Access system and keep them up to date after any MAC work.
b. Follow the discretion of the Telecommunications Service Manager to keep the College compliant with applicable standards, codes, and practices including but not limited to ANSI, TIA, NEC, NFPA, BICSI, etc.
11. Demonstrate excellent customer service when installing, replacing, or troubleshooting issues with customers on campus.
12. Continue to build upon knowledge of all networks and systems administered by Networking and Telecommunications. Research opportunities for training and education and present to service manager for budget inquiry. Investigate both free and paid training. Attend and share at minimum one webinar per quarter and engage discussion amongst peers.
13. Assist the Telecommunications Service Manager with material take off for campus and capital projects
Job Requirements:
Competitive Qualifications:
Four years of full-time experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic equipment.
OR
An associate's degree in electronic technology, or successful completion of a two-year technical professional certification program in the electronics field may be substituted for two years of the required experience
OR
Graduation from a high school technical electronics education program recognized by the New York State Education Department as meeting the standards for technical education may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
Non-competitive Qualifications:
Associate degree in a related field can substitute for two years of specialized experience
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). *To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, candidates must meet the non-competitive minimum qualifications for this position.
Additional Information:
This is a full-time, permanent position.
*For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
