Sergeant

The Sergeant position provides leadership and supervision for Officers, Telecommunicators, event staff and contracted services during shifts to ensure proper functioning of day-to-day public safety operations and events management and may act on behalf of the Director in their absence when so delegated. Exhibits responsible leadership to guide & educate the College community in matters of compliance with College policies and procedures, applicable state and federal laws, and emergency response procedures.

This position is a full-time, benefits eligible, hourly position with a hiring range of $31.27 - $39.10 per hour. On top of the base wage, certain hours are eligible for shift differential.

Core Responsibilities:
Performs supervisory duties of public safety personnel to include telecommunicators, special event staff and contracted services, while directly managing officers in areas of work assignments, shift briefings and investigations, authorization of overtime and time approval. Educates the campus community on topics in safety, security and compliance with College policy through inter-personal communications, organized instruction and enforcement. Responsible for managing and oversight of the department’s response to day, night and weekend incidents and College activities. Must have ability to analyze emergency and non-emergency situations and develop effective courses of action using problem-solving, mediation and de-escalation strategies in accordance with College policies and procedures. Assists with investigations of serious incidents, conducts interviews and completes detailed reports. Provides coaching and direction to officer staff to enhance development of report writing and investigative skills. Reviews and processes incident reports, provides feedback and directs officers to conduct follow up investigation(s), as necessary, to ensure thorough and accurate documentation. Directs College response at incidents & emergencies until a senior level College Administrator, Law Enforcement entity and/or Emergency Services Department takes the lead as appropriate. Recommends staffing needs, manages preliminary and initial stages of the officer hiring process and assists with the hiring process for telecommunicators. Manages the field training program for new officers. Provides feedback, delivers and documents corrective actions and assists Lieutenant, Associate Director and/or Director in cases of disciplinary actions up to and including the termination of employees. Oversees the repeat parking violator process. Issues warning and loss of parking privilege letters and meets with students to establish appropriate plans to improve parking behaviors on campus. Provides direction and guidance to officers to ensure fair, effective, and efficient parking enforcement actions. Performs administrative, investigative, patrol, telecommunications and event management duties as assigned by the Lieutenant, Associate Director, and/or Director. Must attend assigned College supervisory training and department meetings.
