Senior Vice President Underwriting - Workers Compensation

Position Summary:

Specialty Comp Insurance Solutions (“SCIS”) is seeking a WC Underwriting Senior Vice President to lead an underwriting team of three to profitably grow the retail segment of the SCIS portfolio.  This includes growing the existing HUB business as well as developing new retail agency production sources.  The existing underwriting team consists of two senior level underwriting executives and a retail marketing executive.  The successful candidate will be an integral part of SCIS executive leadership and will lead and mentor the team while growing a profitable book of workers’ compensation insurance business through independent agents and specialty producers.

Responsibilities include writing and executing a detailed business plan, developing strong working relationships with HUB marketing leaders and producers, promoting new retail production sources along with reviewing, analyzing, determining best fit, and approving or rejecting both simple and complex workers compensation insurance applications.  The candidate will also be responsible for overseeing, promoting, administration, and accounting for HUB incentive commission plans.

Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), along with time management, strong mathematical aptitude, analytical skills, and sales tenacity are requisite for success.

Responsibilities and Tasks:

Assist in the development of pricing approaches, algorithms, and workflows for submissions of varying size and complexity.

Administration of HUB incentive commission plans

Provide a strong technical and ethical role model for the SCIS retail team

Develop results-based performance management plans for all direct reports

Foster effective relationships with HUB Chief Marketing Officers

Develop relationships with key executives at targeted new retail agencies

Generate new sales volume through existing customers

Retain existing clients and maintain excellent service standards

Review accounts for proper classification and adherence to underwriting guidelines

Analyze and document accounts to determine exposure, fit and appropriate pricing

Conduct internal self-audits

Gather information and report on competitors

Represent the company professionally at events/shows

Provide ongoing management of the business for underwriting quality and service

Gain in-depth knowledge of SCIS products and services

Communicate frequently with production partners

Work with all internal departments and our partners to resolve problems and maintain carrier relations

Attain proficiency with all agency management and policy administration systems in order to efficiently process business

Emphasize benefits of the SCIS value proposition to producers and co-workers

Participate as necessary on special committees and projects

Create and maintain periodic management reports


Experience and Skill Requirements:

An undergraduate degree and familiarity with rating organizations and insurance regulations

Very strong technical underwriting skills with an emphasis on workers’ compensation

12+ years insurance demonstrated leadership/management experience

Existing relationships with national and regional retail brokerage companies is highly desirable

Working knowledge of WC manual rules, classification procedures, etc.

Strong communication and organizational skills

Excellent sales and communication demeanor

Self-starter, creative, and team oriented

Ability to organize work; perform with time constraints and be self-directed

Ability to thrive in a remote work environment

Strong mathematical aptitude

Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point

Ability to adapt to significant change (procedures, processes, and techniques)

Disclosure required under applicable state or municipality regulations: The expected base salary range for this position is $185,000-$225,000 and will be impacted by factors such as the successful candidate’s skills, experience and working location, as well as the specific position’s business line, scope and level.
