What you will be doing 

The Legal Department has an opening for an experienced Trial Attorney with significant employment law expertise, to become a part of its In-House Trial Team. The candidate must be licensed to practice in California and be prepared to litigate and try employment-related and other cases.  

Principally responsible for defending Safeway and Albertsons in administrative claims and single or multi-plaintiff lawsuits filed in California. Also responsible for seeking restraining orders and advising the Asset Protection organization on employee and customer safety issues.  This role will also respond to pre-litigation demand letters and conduct internal investigations as necessary. May also be called upon to provide advice and counsel regarding employment discrimination, wage and hour issues and ADA Access issues to internal clients. The position will also have responsibility for handling subpoenas, inquiries from regulators, customer disputes and commercial litigation.  

The position will be based in Pleasanton CA. 

 

Main responsibilities 

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:  

Work collaboratively with Asset Protection, Human Resources, Management and Labor Relations to investigate and defend claims by current and former employees.   Litigate and try cases independently, solely with assistance of paralegals and staff.  Be responsive to and develop good relationships with outside administrative agencies.   Negotiate favorable resolutions of matters, as appropriate.   Provide advice and counsel on employment discrimination, wage and hours and other employment-related matters.   Provide expert advice on ADA access issues.   Handle customer and other third-party disputes and claims.   Respond to subpoenas, search warrants and other requests from governmental agencies.  

 

The salary range is $177,000 to $248,000 annually. Starting salary will vary based on criteria such as location, experience, and qualifications. There may be flexibility for exceptional candidates.  

 

What we are searching for 

Qualifications:  

Minimum of 10+ years in private practice and/or in-house legal department experience in relevant areas   First-chair Trial Experience   Substantive knowledge of employment laws and regulations, administrative procedures, court rules and legal research skills in order to effectively defend the Company   Strong negotiation, decision making, interviewing, investigation, and problem-solving skills.   Good judgment, collaboration, interpersonal and communication skills.   Ability to work independently and exercise excellent judgement and discretion   Excellent oral and written communication skills.   Travel will be required   Regular and predictable attendance required
